Ayatollah Khomeini’s Son Stricken

Compiled From Wire Services

The son of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini is brain dead after suffering a serious heart attack, Iran’s state-run Tehran Radio said Monday.

The vociferously anti-American Ahmad Khomeini has long been considered a possible contender for high office, despite his low profile in the six years since his father’s death.

The head of the medical team treating the 50-year-old Khomeini at Tehran’s Baqiyatollah Hospital said his brain and nervous system stopped working after the heart attack Sunday.

The 30 doctors treating him were facing “immense problems” with his circulatory and respiratory systems as well as with his liver, but his heart and lungs were functioning, Dr. Hassan Arefi said.
