Axle Breaks; Truck Crashes On I-90 Overpass

Gita Sitaramiah Staff writer

The front end of a 5-ton flatbed truck teetered over the edge of an Interstate 90 overpass after it hit a barrier above East Sprague on Monday evening.

Two cars and a pickup heading east on Sprague under the overpass in the Spokane Valley were hit by falling concrete, said trooper Bill Bingfield of the Washington State Patrol.

No one was injured in the 7:07 p.m. accident.

An axle on the trailer being pulled by the westbound truck broke; the driver, who was not identified, lost control and crashed into the railing along the left side of I-90.

The trailer was carrying a small front-end loader, Bingfield said.

“It rained cement,” said Matt Morley, who was driving his 1987 Mazda 626. “I thought it was an earthquake.” The front end of his car was damaged.

George Czerwonka Jr. said he drove his company’s 1993 Chevrolet Corsica over fallen concrete and thought he might have damaged the car’s undercarriage.

A pickup also sustained minor damage.

Chunks of concrete littered both eastbound lanes of East Sprague. Both lanes were closed; then one lane was reopened.
