Mirer Changes Styles

Compiled From Wire Services

Rick Mirer is learning a whole new way to play quarterback.

New Seattle Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson has replaced Tom Flores’ dropback, vertical stretch offense with a quickpass attack that Erickson hopes will make better use of Mirer’s talents.

“When we do all understand what’s going on, it’s going to be a pretty nice system,” Mirer said during a minicamp for veterans at Kirkland, Wash.

Also at the minicamp, Brian Blades, who caught a franchise-record 81 passes last season, was missing and hadn’t contacted Erickson.

Bill Hitchcock, a Seahawks starting guard, may have played his last NFL game because of arthritis in his back. The Seahawks signed 35-year-old offensive tackle Rich Baldinger on Tuesday to fill out an offensive line thin on experienced blockers.

Lawrence Taylor may be interested in coming out of retirement after 14 months. His former team and coach aren’t.

Neither the New York Giants nor former Giants and current New England Patriots coach Bill Parcells sounded excited about the prospect of seeing the 36-year-old back in uniform.

“No. No. No,” Parcells said through a Patriots spokesman when asked about the possibility of Taylor joining New England.
