Former Washington State University coach Kelvin Sampson, now at Oklahoma, was named to the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches… . Michael McClain, who was the starting point guard before his seasonending suspension in February, said he will transfer from the University of Washington’s men’s basketball team to a school closer to his home in Springfield, Mo. McClain pleaded guilty March 22 to a fourth-degree assault charge that involved Huskies women’s basketball star Rhonda Smith.

Scott Humphries and Paul Goldstein won their singles matches, then teamed to win the No. 1 doubles as Stanford (27-0) completed a premier season with a 4-0 victory over Mississippi to win the NCAA men’s tennis championship at Athens, Ga. … Texas lost four singles matches then swept the doubles to beat top-ranked Florida 5-4 and win the NCAA Division I women’s tennis championship at Malibu, Calif. At Loreto, 34-year-old Swiss cyclist Tony Rominger won the fourth stage of the Tour of Italy and strengthened his overall lead in the race. Rominger edged Maurizio Fondriest by 4 seconds.
