Aging Olympic Champ Turns In Golden Effort For 200 Meter Victory

There is still a lot of competitive life left in Carl Lewis.

Lewis, who will be 34 on July 1, showed it Sunday, winning the 200 meters in 20.28 seconds at the New York Games.

“I’m not dead yet,” the eight-time Olympic gold medalist and eight-time World Championship gold medalist said after his first victory in a 200 final since July 7, 1993, at Lille, France. “I’m not out of the competition. You can’t count me out.”

In addition to Lewis, several other athletes turned in impressive performances.

Gwen Torrence, the 1992 Olympic 200 meters gold medalist, raced to a 7-meter victory at 22.04, the fastest in the world this year and well under the meet record of 22.56 she set in 1992.

Long jumper Kareem StreeteThompson, ranked No. 2 in the world, won at 28 feet, 1 inch, the best in the world for 1995 and equaling Lewis’ meet record set three years ago.
