Native Americans Excel In Academic Contest

Alison Boggs Staff Writer

A team of six students from East Valley High School took first place in the fourth annual Native American Academic Challenge.

More than 60 students from Eastern Washington competed in the contest, which is put on by Spokane School District 81’s Title V program.

Team members included: Sean Barker, Heather Noyes and Renee Noyes of the Colville tribe, Nicole Griffith of the Cherokees, Joey Hill of the Choctaws and Derek Roybal of the Miami tribe.

The contest, designed to bring together Native American students and help familiarize them with their culture, was held last month in Spokane.

“None of them have ever lived on a reservation, so they’re getting their culture through these types of experiences,” said Tess Shearer, the team’s coach.

Individual honors went to Barker for second place in the math competition and to Griffith for second place in the speech contest. The team also won second place in the team bowl contest.

Think they’ll see Mickey?

The Central Valley High School marching band will play at Disneyland in late October as part of a national competition.

The band was invited to perform in the Western National Marching Bands of America competition in Los Angeles on Oct. 28.

While there, the band will take part in Magic Music Day at Disneyland and will participate in a private practice with the University of Southern California marching band.

The CV band was selected from a field of outstanding bands from seven states. The band also took top prize at the Puget Sound Championships for the second year in a row.

Student business leaders

Five CVHS students are off to Orlando, Fla. in late June to compete at a national leadership conference.

After winning state prizes last month, David Johnson, Kathy Temple, Desiree Lockwood, Melissa Flockhart and Marissa Sprank all will compete at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Orlando from June 30 to July 3.

Other CVHS winners in the regional contest were: Kelly Erikson, Tarra Boarden, Jennifer McKee, Tuan Lee, Christina Thomas, Justin Johnson and Jennie Tinsley.

David Johnson also was elected northeast vice president of the state FBLA, and will serve during the 1995-96 school year.

Those coins really add up

Each year, the coins that people toss into a fountain at U-City Mall add up to hundreds of dollars in scholarships for Spokane Valley students.

This year, four $500 scholarships were awarded to Valley students. The students are selected based on grade point average, school and community involvement and teacher/counselor recommendations.

Those students are: Rebecca Stone of University High School, Shannon Mortensen of West Valley High School, Tara Borden of Central Valley High School, and Melissa Reid of East Valley High School.

‘Space Night at St. Paschal’s

Locate constellations, make a space project and step into a miniplanetarium at St. Paschal’s School ‘Space Night’ on Friday.

All the students in the K-8 school have been studying astronomy this year and plan to show off their accomplishments in the school basement from 7 to 9 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.
