Olympic Champ Falls

Compiled From Wire Services

Fifteen-year-old Brooke Bennett defeated Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic swimming gold medalist, in the 400-meter freestyle at the Alamo Challenge.

Bennett, who is in the ninth grade in Brandon, Fla., had gradually narrowed the gap between herself and America’s premier freestyler. But she hadn’t beaten Evans until Sunday.

“I got chills through my body,” said Bennett, whose time of 4 minutes, 12.24 seconds was almost 2 seconds ahead of Evans. “It was really neat. It shows me what could come in the future.”
