Massachusetts Coach Feeling ‘Heat’ After Discussing Miami Job

Compiled From Wire Services

University of Massachusetts coach John Calipari interviewed for the Miami Heat coaching job, The Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday.

Calipari, who built Massachusetts into a national power, met with Heat executive vice president Dave Wohl early last week at an unspecified location outside Miami, the Post said.

“What I want to say at this time is this: I am the coach at UMass, and I intend to stay as the coach at UMass,” said Calipari, who also interviewed with the Boston Celtics last week and could hear from the New York Knicks if Pat Riley leaves that job. “Several NBA teams have asked me to talk with them, and out of courtesy, I am doing that. My desire is to keep coaching at UMass, period.”

Wohl declined to comment on the report, but said he may complete initial interviews of six or seven candidates by the end of this week. Wohl hopes to hire a coach by mid-June.
