With the specter of Canadian separatism lifted from the market, rumors of renewed Japanese investment in the United States lifted the dollar to a six-week high against the yen on Wednesday.
The greenback also rose against other major currencies, particularly the German mark, as numerous political firestorms in Europe cooled.
In late New York trading, the dollar rose to 1.4265 German marks, up from 1.4082 late Monday. It also rose from 102.06 to 103.15 yen, its highest finish since hitting 104.67 on Sept. 20.
