Arizona Comeback Tops Asu Wildcats Score 17 Points In Final 6:30, Prevail 31-28

Jon Prashun kicked a 36-yard field goal with 22 seconds left as Arizona scored 17 points in the final 6:30 to beat Arizona State 31-28 on Friday.

Arizona State (6-5, 4-4 Pacific-10 Conference) probably needed a win to make either the Liberty or Independence bowls, which had representatives present.

The Sun Devils haven’t been in a bowl since the 1987 Freedom Bowl and lost Rose Bowl bids in 1982 and 1985 after defeats by archrival Arizona.

Arizona State, which led 17-14 at halftime, appeared to have the game in hand when Ryan Wood’s 1-yard touchdown run and Jake Plummer’s 2-point conversion pass to Steve Bush made it 28-14 with 7:54 remaining.

But Dan White, who completed 25 of 38 passes for 289 yards, threw his third scoring pass of the game, a 6-yarder to Cary Taylor, to bring Arizona (6-5, 4-4) within 28-21 with 6:30 to play.

Plummer fumbled when sacked from behind on the ensuing series and defensive tackle Joe Salave’a returned the ball 8 yards for the game-tying score with 5:29 left.
