Seahawks’ Smith Out For Year

Compiled From Wire Services

Steve Smith’s season with the Seahawks apparently is over because of a bulging disc in his back.

Coach Dennis Erickson said he doesn’t expect his starting fullback to be available for the Seahawks’ final four games. Smith, a nine-year veteran in his second season with the Seahawks, has missed the last three games because of the disc that is pushing on a nerve.

Rookie running back Curtis Martin of New England, second in the AFC in rushing, was selected AFC offensive player of the week for his 148-yard performance in a win against Buffalo.

Brett Perriman of Detroit earned NFC offensive player honors for catching 12 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions’ win over Minnesota.

Tim McDonald of San Francisco was named the NFC defensive player and Tony Bennett of Indianapolis was named the AFC defensive player. Chad Cascadden of the Jets had five tackles on special teams in the Jets’ 16-10 victory in Seattle to earn AFC special teams honors. Jeff Feagles of Arizona was named NFC special teams player.

The Jets figure to be without star rookie Hugh Douglas (high ankle sprain) against St. Louis and the defensive end might be sidelined three to four weeks.

Fullback Raymont Harris, a rookie surprise last year who broke his collarbone on the Bears’ second play this season, was placed on injured reserve.

Indianapolis Colts owner Robert Irsay was brought to a hospital emergency room Wednesday night. St. Vincent’s Hospital spokeswoman Tenna Boone said she did not know why Irsay, 72, was there.
