Pilots Hold Off Gonzaga, 2-1

The University of Portland scored two first-half goals then held off Gonzaga University in the second half for a 2-1 victory Sunday at Martin Field in the West Coast Conference men’s soccer opener for both teams.

Portland (8-0-3), ranked 7th by Soccer News, got on the scoreboard first when Keir Cochran took a pass back from Linus Rhode to score at 10:51. Chris Brown gave the Pilots a 2-0 halftime lead when he put in a rebound off a Davide Xausa shot.

Shaun Flanigan scored the Bulldogs lone goal at 55:54.

Women’s soccer

For the fourth straight match, the Washington State women’s soccer team (2-8-1) was shut out, this time in the rain by visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3-0.

Stacia Naylor scored two goals, one in each half, to lead Edmonds Community College past the Community Colleges of Spokane 2-1 in NWAACC conference play. Kerri Stockwell scored Spokane’s (1-3-0) only goal.

College golf

Ryan Deiro of Boise State and Jen McGregor of Montana State took first-round leads at the Big Sky Conference golf championships in Bozeman, Mont.

Julie Gish of Eastern Washington is second in the women’s individual standings.

Defending champion Weber State holds a 290-291 edge over Boise State in the men’s team race while Montana State leads the women’s competition.

Playfair

Diamond Edge and Nightly Habit promoted their ambitions for late-season stakes victories by winning the cofeatures at Playfair Race Course.

Diamond Edge joined the roster of Playfair Mile candidates with a stretch-turn move that carried him past Slewty, the pace-setter, in the one-mile ninth race.

Nightly Habit held off the late-bid of double stakes-winner Night Rodeo for a one-length victory in the 10th race.
