Mead Bests G-Prep To Retain Soccer Lead

Mead maintained its hold on first place in the Greater Spokane League girls soccer standings after squeaking by Gonzaga Prep 2-1 in overtime at Mead Junior High on Monday night.

The Panthers won the “ruler of the city” game before a crowd of 600 when Jaclyn Burton led her defender to the left side of the field, clearing the way and passing the ball to Stacey Clinesmith, who scored the final goal at the 4:00 mark in overtime.

Holly Vanwert had five saves for Mead (10-1-0-0).

Angela Harrison had seven saves and Marisa Jenkins had the only score for the Bullpups (8-0-1-2).

At North Central, a Jen Hutchinson penalty kick in the first half lifted Shadle Park over the Indians 1-0.

The Highlanders (2-0-1-9) managed to shut down NC with key saves by goalkeeper Tara Buckley, who had five in the game. Kami McGowan had 10 saves for the Indians (1-2-0-9).

At University, Rogers was held to just two shots on goal as the Titans shut out the Pirates 11-0.

Andrea Shrier, Sara Streufert and Emily Stuenkel scored two goals each for U-Hi (6-0-1-4).

At Central Valley, Lewis and Clark used three penalty kicks to beat the Bears 3-1 in overtime.

Goalkeepers Anna Adolphson (LC) and Natasha Opsal (CV) had eight saves apiece.

Golf

Eastern Washington University’s Scott Carroll is eight strokes back at 146 and in second place in the men’s individual standings going into the final day of the Big Sky Conference championships today at Bozeman.

Idaho’s Elizabeth Carter shot the best women’s round Monday with a 75 and moved into fourth place, seven strokes out of the lead in the women’s individual competition.

In the men’s standings, Idaho is in third place (603) and EWU is in fourth place (609), both trailing leader Boise State (584).

Ryan Deiro of Boise State is the men’s individual leader at 138.

UI is led by Mark Hogaboam, who is in 10th place with 151.

In the women’s standings, Idaho is holding on to fourth place (666) with EWU in sixth (674) behind leader Weber State (644).

Montana State’s Jen McGregor is the women’s leader at 152. Elizabeth Carter leads the Idaho women with 159, while Eastern is led by Brooke Hanford with 161.

Mark Rohde of Liberty Lake was the top Northwest Professional finisher in the 1995 PGA Club Professional Championship held in La Quinta, Cal., during the weekend.

Rohde, a professional at Valley View Golf Course, had a 2-under-par 286 for 72 holes and collected $1,750.

Triathlon

Brad Vanwert was the top Spokane finisher in the Gatorade Ironman Triathalon during the weekend in Hawaii.

Vanwert finished in 10 hours, 29 minutes, 1 second.

Brian Joffords of Cheney finished in 11:40:42, and Clark Rauer of Spokane finished at 14:40:55.

Patricia Johnson of Valleyford was the area’s top woman, finishing in 14:23:33. Sister Madonna Buder of Spokane finished at 15:22:49.

Mark Allen of Cardiff, Calif., was the men’s winner for the sixth time in seven years, covering 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run in 8:20:34.

Women’s winner was Karen Smyers of Lincolnm, Ma., who passed seven-time winner Paula Newby Fraser with less than a mile to go and clocked 9:16:46.
