Nominate Your Favorite Senior For An Award

Sharma Shields Ferris

Hey teens, now’s the chance to honor your elders instead of simply respecting them.

Kentucky Fried Chicken recently announced its Colonel’s Way Award, a program that encourages kids and people of all ages to appreciate what senior citizens have contributed to our society. KFC’s example is Colonel Harland Sanders, who opened his first restaurant at age 62.

The Colonel’s Way Award recognizes persons 60 years or older who have excelled in one of six categories: business, education, sports, family, arts and community service. The top prize is $10,000; the five category winners get $2,500 and nominators get $500.

The contest is open to the public and anyone (that means us, local teens!) can nominate a senior citizen by writing a 250-word or less essay describing how the senior has succeeded and contributed to their community.

Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 19. For entry information and contest rules, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Colonel’s Way Award, 200 E. Randolph Dr., 63rd floor, Chicago, IL 60601.

Make a difference: Not only will senior citizens be recognized for phenomenal community service, the 23rd Annual Colgate Youth for America Campaign will make sure young people get their day of fame, too.

This program gives cash grants for the best executed projects in the United States by units of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, Girls Incorporated, Camp Fire and 4-H.

More than 240 winners will receive checks for up to $2,000 from Colgate-Palmolive Company, and a celebrity panel of judges determines the best community services.

Clubs have until March 15 to develop and execute programs of value to their communities and send in their reports. Participants range from 5-year-olds to high school teenagers.

If you participate in any of the above clubs and are interested in getting your troop to participate, entry forms are now available through regional offices of the national organizations, or may be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Colgate’s Youth for America, P.O. Box 1058, FDR Station, New York, NY 10150-1058.
