Matthew Melcher Receives UW Memorial Scholarship

Matthew Melcher, a 1988 Lewis and Clark High School graduate, received the $8,000 Floyd A. Naramore Architectural Memorial Scholarship from the University of Washington’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

The scholarship is awarded to UW students to continue their studies in architecture and urban planning. Melcher graduated from UW in 1992 with a degree in architecture.

Melcher, son of Patty and Robert Sanford, Irvine, Calif., and Randy and Penny Melcher, Spokane, is enrolled in the graduate program at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Kyle West, a graduate of Northwest Christian High School, received a scholarship from Consolidated Freightways, Inc., Palo Alto, Calif. He is attending Washington State University and majoring in electrical engineering.

Kevin Krauss, Spokane, and Tonya Smith, Deer Park, will serve on the national Youth Advisory Council of Camp Fire Boys and Girls. Only eight teens from across the United States are selected to serve a two-year term on the council.

Krauss, son of Lora and Ted Krauss, is a junior at Cheney High School, and Smith, daughter of Chris and Neal Smith, is a junior at Deer Park High School.

Cheryl Steele, program coordinator for the Spokane Police Department’s COPS project, has received the 1995 National Distinguished Leadership Award.

Steele was nominated by Leadership Spokane for her work in developing COPS substations and organizing groups interested in helping police suppress crime.

She received her award in Washington D.C. on Oct. 7.

Two military persons from the Inland Northwest have been promoted to their present ranks:

Marine Cpl. Ryan Berendson, son of Robert and Wanda Rains, Chewelah, Wash., is stationed with Marine Attack Squadron 311, Marine Air Corps Station, Yuma, Ariz. He is a 1992 graduate of Jenkins High School.

Marine Cpl. Joshua McLann, son of Leslie and Pauline McLann, Spokane, is stationed with Marine Attack Squadron 211, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Force Station, Yuma, Ariz. He is a 1993 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Cadet Paul Forgey, son of Brad and Janene Forgey, Spokane, is serving a term as a brigade color lieutenant in the cadet color guard at the U.S. Military Academy. Forgey received the position for his superior academic and military performance as a cadet. He is a 1992 graduate of West Valley High School.

Paula Johnson, received an academic scholarship of $16,000 from North Park College of Chicago.

Johnson, daughter of Jeanette Johnson, was selected as a Presidential Scholar for her strong academic record. She plans to major in philosophy and religion.

Donald Knowles Jr, Pullman, was one of eight veterinarians to receive the 1995 Samuel Scheidy Memorial Award.

He and the other recipients reported on their research projects during the World Veterinary Congress last month in Yokohama, Japan. Knowles’ research has contributed to current biotechnological advances in veterinary medicine.

He is an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at Washington State University and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologist.

Tiffany Meyers, Melissa Migliuri, and Bridget Venne, all of Gonzaga Preparatory School, have been semifinalists in the 41st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They competed against students nationwide for scholarships totaling $26 million.
