Eagles Come Up Short Against Goods’ Effort

Kelly Goods had 20 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks to lift Idaho State over Eastern Washington University 10-15, 16-14, 15-5, 15-10 in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Friday night in Pocatello, Idaho.

Kim Exner led the Eagles with 23 kills and seven digs, and Kellie Glaus added 12 kills, 13 digs and 10 blocks.

In Boise, Tzvetelina Yanchulova had 31 kills and 10 digs to lead 24th-ranked Idaho past Boise State 15-5, 15-5, 11-15, 15-7 in another Big Sky matchup. Lynne Hyland had 57 assists for the Vandals.The Cardinals rallied from a 6-14 deficit in the second game. Meghan Poulion and Chris Brozik each tallied three service aces for NIC. Jennifer Downing contributed 14 digs.

In Pasco, Stefanie Short had 16 kills as the Community Colleges of Spokane finished its season in a tie for first place in the NWAACC East by defeating Columbia Basin College 10-15, 15-12, 15-7, 15-2.

The Sasquatch and Hawks will meet in a playoff to determine the seeding for the NWAACC’s postseason tournament. Cheryl Hovde had 35 assists and Kaya Allen six digs to lead CCS.

Women’s soccer

Sarah Rutz scored at 87:37 to break a 1-1 tie and give San Francisco a 2-1 win over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match at GU.

Megan Keaty scored her third goal in two matches at 6:30 for GU.

Football

Forty-eight youngsters ages 8-15 - the local competition winners from Spokane, Colville, Chewelah, Ephrata, Moses Lake and Idaho - will be at North Central High School today for the sectional finals in the NFL/ Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick competition. It begins at 1 p.m.

Boxing

A pair of silver medalists from the National Silver Gloves competition will meet in the 119-pound feature of a 12-bout amateur boxing card tonight at 7:30 at the Spokane Karate Center, 1818-1/2 E. Sprague.

Mahlon Kerwick of the host Lilac City Boxing Club, the 1994 Silver Gloves runner-up, will take on ‘95 silver medalist Dewey Welliver of The Athletes Arena North. Both are 14 years old.

Junior hockey

Rossland beat the visiting Spokane Braves 6-5 in a KIJHL game despite two goals from Darin Talotti.
