Lake City Celebrates First Football Victory

Football

The Lake City High School football team will always remember Oct. 20, 1995. That’s the day the Timberwolves won their first game in history.

The Timberwolves, behind two third-quarter touchdowns, topped Lakeland 15-6 in a non-league game at Corbit Field in Rathdrum.

Lake City’s Brian Ross put the game away with a 59-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 in Lake City territory.

“It was so much fun because the kids were so excited and the parents and fans ended up staying out on the field with everybody jumping around and hugging for at least 15 minutes,” Lake City coach Van Troxel said.

Lake City scored its first touchdown on a David Nelson 1-yard run. The extra point gave the Timberwolves a 7-6 lead.

It was set up when the T-Wolves recovered a Hawk fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half.

Lakeland scored in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Kurt Reese.

“The first one ever is quite a feeling,” Troxel said. “We worked so many hours, it relieves all the frustration and creates real excitement for us …”
