Gen. Powell’s Political Star Is Falling

Associated Press

Public interest in former Joint Chiefs Chairman Colin Powell as an independent presidential candidate has waned in the past year, according to a poll released by Newsweek magazine on Friday.

In a three-way matchup with President Clinton and GOP presidential front-runner Bob Dole, Powell got 21 percent among registered voters, compared to 36 percent for Clinton and 33 percent for Dole, the Senate majority leader.

Those results show Powell down from 30 percent support in a similar hypothetical matchup last October. Then, he was two points ahead of Dole and 4 behind Clinton.
