Joseph Quigney Jr. Juneau, Alaska

No service is planned for Joseph John Quigney Jr., 38. Juneau Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Quigney died Aug. 27 in Juneau. The cause of death is under investigation.

He was born in Springfield, Mass.

Mr. Quigney had lived in Spokane since he was an infant and had traveled to Juneau in July.

He had worked for the railroad and was a tattoo artist. He had also worked as a roofer, painter and concrete layer.

He is survived by one son, Michael Quigney; his mother, Julia Moore of Spokane; one half-sister, Carol Autrey of Juneau; and his grandmother, Wilma Olson of Spokane.

Ruth Clemons Spokane

Vigil service for Ruth Edna Clemons, 69, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Clemons died Tuesday.

She was born in Silverton, Ore.

A homemaker, she was a Spokane resident for 65 years and was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Glenn Clemons; two sons, Ronald Clemons of Mead and Michael Clemons of Spokane; and one sister, Laura Davey of Kalispell, Mont.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Shirley Platz Spokane

Service for Shirley Maria Platz, 48, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home with burial at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Platz died Monday.

She was born in Austria and had lived in Spokane more than 35 years.

Mrs. Platz had worked as an accountant for Goodale and Barbieri for 12 years.

She is survived by her husband, Calvin Platz; two daughters, Cary Russell of Spokane and Lynne Platz of Tigard, Ore.; her father, Jerry Anderson of Deer Lake, Wash.; one sister, Lynda Anderson of Spokane; one brother, Michael Anderson of Edmonds, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Larry Schlecht Mead

Service for Larry C. Schlecht, 48, is set for 11 a.m. today at HennesseySmith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Schlecht, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He graduated from West Valley High School.

He was a self-employed masonry contractor and a semipro rodeo cowboy.

Mr. Schlecht was the head coach for the Spokane Community College rodeo team and was a former rodeo chairman for the Spokane Interstate Fair.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Professional Washington Rodeo Association, the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, the U.S. Team Roping Association, the Montana Rodeo Association, Brick Layers International, and the Christian Cowboy Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Toni Schlecht; two daughters, Corrie Shoemaker of Pendleton, Ore., and Jamie Schlecht of Mead; his mother, Leona Schlecht Gunderson of Spokane; one brother, Jimmie Schlecht of Valleyford; and one grandson.

Freda Schonfeld Spokane

Service for Freda A. Schonfeld, 88, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Schonfeld, who died Monday, was born in Sweden.

She was a Spokane resident for the past 50 years.

Mrs. Schonfeld was a member of the Garden Club in Millwood and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, George “Bud” Schonfeld; two daughters, Delores Welin of Sacheen Lake, Wash., and Patricia Wilcox of Worland, Wyo.; one grandson and one granddaughter.

Donald Mooney Spokane

Memorial service for Donald G. Mooney, 64, will be at 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Mooney, a longtime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

Born in Spokane, he graduated from Rogers High School.

He had worked for the Davenport Hotel, Brownie Baking Co., Ideal Laundry and Paris Cleaners before becoming manager of an Avis car rental franchise at Spokane International Airport in the 1960s.

He worked for Spokane Punchboard in the 1970s, selling gaming equipment. In 1975 he established Cardinal Distributing.

Mr. Mooney was a member of the Eagles Lodge 2 and the Police Guild.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Mooney of Salem, Ore., and Kevin Mooney of Spokane; one daughter, Patricia Anne Dobeas of Bremerton; his mother, Marguerite Templin of Kirkland, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Steven Schweitzer Spokane

Funeral Mass for Steven L. Schweitzer, 38, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at St. Ann Catholic Church. There will be private inurnment at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schweitzer, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday. The cause of death is under investigation.

He graduated from Ferris High School and worked for various car dealerships in Spokane.

He is survived by two sons, Joel Schweitzer of Spokane and Jeff Schweitzer of Denver; his mother, Doreen Shyvers of Spokane; his father and stepmother, Leonard and Mildred Schweitzer of Spokane; two brothers, David Schweitzer of Plano, Texas, and Neil Schweitzer of Spokane; one sister, Linda McGinn of San Diego; two stepbrothers, Randy Slagle of Spokane and Gary Slagle of Seattle; and one stepsister, Dorothy Winget of Vancouver, B.C.

Claude ‘Ferdie’ James Jr. Spokane

Service for Claude “Ferdie” James Jr. will be at 11 a.m. today at the Oakesdale (Wash.) Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Oakesdale Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James, 74, died Friday.

He was born in Oakesdale and moved to Spokane in 1974.

Mr. James had worked in the laundry business before retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Oakesdale Masonic Lodge, the El Katif Shrine and the Teamsters Union.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lucille; one son, Steve James of Woodinville, Wash.; one daughter, Judy Larkin of Spokane; four sisters, Alva Sanders of Spokane, Arta Lust and Lorrie Desilets, both of Yakima, and Lynda Smith of Redmond, Wash.; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Harley Hadley Spokane

Graveside service for Harley A. Hadley, 84, is planned for 11 a.m. today at the Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hadley died Saturday.

Born in Latah, he graduated from high school in Republic, Wash.

He and his wife, Thelma Sherwood, moved to Spokane in 1944.

Mr. Hadley operated a service station in the Millwood and Dishman areas and worked as a custodian for Central Valley High School. He retired in 1976.

He was a member of the Millwood Community Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Thelma Hadley; two sons, Dale Hadley of Olympia and Ronald Hadley of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Wilena ‘Peggy’ Garrett Spokane

No service will be held for Wilena “Peggy” Gibson Garrett, 74.

Mrs. Garrett, who was born in Birmingham, Ala., died Monday at home.

She had lived in Spokane for 15 years and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Francis; one son, Ronald Garrett of Spokane; one daughter, Ginger Garrett of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and two sisters, Mary Livingston and Elrose Anderson of Birmingham.

Memorial contributions may be made to Union Gospel Mission.

Howard Wood Spokane

Service for Howard Dwight Wood, 70, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hillyard Church of God. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wood died Saturday at home.

He was born in Elmwood, Neb.

Mr. Wood worked as a mechanic in Spokane for 28 years.

He lived in Spokane for more than 40 years and had served in the Army and Army National Guard for more than 37 years.

He was a member of the Church of God.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ruth Wood; three sons, David Wood, Howard Daryl Wood and Daniel Vincent Wood; one daughter, Yvonne Marie Edmons; three brothers Keith Wood, Daryl Wood and Roger Wood; five sisters, Delores Beckel, Ruth Jones, Avis Tinknell, Sonja Wood and Clarice Burrow; and 13 grandchildren.

Teresia Johann Spokane

Vigil service for Teresia V. Johann, 93, will be at 8:30 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Johann, who died Sunday, was born in Genesee, Idaho.

A homemaker, she had been a resident of Spokane since 1945.

Her husband, Theodore, died in 1974.

She is survived by one son, Ron Johann of Spokane; four daughters, Irma Bloom of Newman Lake, Irene Rutz of Spokane, Gloria Tuttle of Wenatchee and RaNae Orsi of Spokane; two brothers, Bernard and Andrew Grieser, both of Genesee; three sisters, Margaret Rosenberger of Lewiston, Dolores Loncosty of Spokane and Helen McDermitt of North Hollywood, Calif.; 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Irais Fletcher Spokane

Service for Irais J. Fletcher, 75, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Church of the Open Bible. Graveside service will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Fletcher, a longtime Spokane resident, died Friday.

She was born in Fort Benton, Mont.

Mrs. Fletcher retired as an executive secretary at Eastern Washington University’s School of Business.

She is survived by one son, Richard Fletcher of San Jose, Calif; four daughters, Rosanne Unger of Hillsboro, Ore., Vicki Mulak of Tustin, Calif., and Shawn Wilson and Kathy Jo Avery, both of Spokane; one sister, Sister Mary Loretta Swenson of Spokane; three brothers, David Swenson of Spokane, Ferdinand Swenson of Walla Walla and Howard Swenson of Seattle; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Ernest Fuehrer Spokane

Graveside service for Ernest G. Fuehrer, 89, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Spokane Memorial Garden. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Stockham, Neb., Mr. Fuehrer died Tuesday.

He served in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II.

He had worked for the city of Spokane and was a member of the Spokane Valley Assembly of God.

His wife, Verla, died in April.

He is survived by two daughters, Eunice Peterson and Arvellen Monaghan, both of Spokane; one son, Dean Fuehrer of Spokane; two brothers, Albert Fuehrer of Boise and Bernie Fuehrer of Sidney, Neb.; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Josephine Hall Spokane

Graveside service for Josephine A. Hall, 92, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverside Memorial Park. Memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hall, a 73-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

Born in Green Isle, Minn., she worked for Woolworth’s in the 1930s and early 1940s. She retired in 1967.

Mrs. Hall was a member of Emmanual Lutheran Church and had lived in Spokane for 73 years.

She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary 9.

She volunteered more than 500 hours of service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Her husband, William, died in 1968.

She is survived by one son, Warren Hall of Spokane; one daughter, Willa Jo “Babe” Hall-Gardner of Madeira Park, British Columbia; three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

David Dennis Spokane

Graveside service for David J. Dennis, 80, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Dennis, who died Saturday, was born in Neva, Wis.

He was a heavy equipment operator. He moved to Eastern Washington to work on construction of Grand Coulee Dam and moved to Spokane in 1945.

Mr. Dennis was a member of the Moose Lodge 161, Eagles Aerie 2, the Teamsters Union Local 690 and the Crestline Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by 10 children, two brothers, one sister and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

B. Jean Hamilton Spokane

Private memorial service for B. Jean Hamilton will be held. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hamilton, 81, died Saturday.

She was born in Palouse, Wash.

Mrs. Hamilson had worked as a waitress.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Hamilton; one son, Bob Erdman of Spokane; three daughters, Carole Wenzel and Joanne Townsend, both of Spokane, and June Metcalf of Lincoln, Neb.; one sister, Virginia McVey of Seattle; two brothers, Floyd and Bill Katsel, both of Seattle; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
