Packwood Says His Own Diaries Inaccurate

From Staff And Wire Reports

Sen. Bob Packwood, forced from the Senate by charges of sexual misconduct and abuse of power, said Sunday his diary is littered with inaccuracies and won’t help jog his memory.

Appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Packwood repeated his qualified apology to women who accused him of unwanted sexual advances.

“Am I sorry? Of course. If I did the things that they said I did. Am I sorry, do I apologize? Yes. But it is time to get on and not look back.”

Pressed to explain why he still questioned the veracity of the accusations, Packwood said he cannot remember most of the instances - even with the aid a personal diary dating back 25 years.

“I have discovered there are many inaccuracies in the diary,” he said. “I have discovered since this came up that a number of the things that I put in it were inaccurate, some of them simply were not true. I didn’t know it at the time but they weren’t true.”

Packwood, R-Ore., said he recounted conversations that didn’t happen and quoted people saying thing they never said. He has previously attributed his memory loss to alcoholism.
