Zags Drop Pair At Wyoming Invite

Lemia Astarabadi had 25 assists and Anna Parmely 10 digs Saturday to lead the host Wyoming Cowboys (5-4) to a 15-7, 15-3, 15-9 volleyball win over Gonzaga at the Wyoming Invitational at Laramie.

Kristina Dzelme added nine kills for Wyoming, which held GU to a minus hitting percentage. Christine Kubista had nine digs and Nora Grasham six kills for the Bulldogs.

In a late match, Hadli Anstine had 17 kills and Nikki Nicholson 18 digs as Georgia (7-3) defeated GU 14-16, 15-6, 15-5, 15-11.

Wendy Wilson had 14 kills and 20 digs, and Nicole Lamoure 43 assists for the Bulldogs (2-10).

Paula Araujo of College of Southern Idaho was named most valuable player after the Golden Eagles defeated Ricks 15-7, 15-9 in the title game of the Friendship Tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

CSI lost just one game during seven tourney matches. Sheridan defeated host CC Spokane 4-15, 15-12, 20-18 in the match for third and fourth. Lori Peters of CCS made the all-tournament team.

Willow Stutzke had 21 digs and Charysse Chowning 11 kills during Linfield’s 15-8, 13-15, 15-8, 15-3 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges win at Whitworth (0-2, 1-10).

The Wildcats are 2-0, 9-1. Renee Williams had 11 kills and four blocks for Whitworth.

Tournament most valuable player Jemena Yocom had 23 kills against Southeast Missouri State and teammate Tzvetelina Yanchulova had 19 kills against Cal State Northridge as host Idaho (9-2) won its Branegan’s/ Safeco Classic at Moscow.

Women’s soccer

Amy Snyder and Martina Holan scored second-half goals 10 minutes apart to give Colorado College (5-0) a 2-1 non-conference win over Washington State (1-3-1) at Missoula.Defense ruled until Snyder’s unassisted goal near the 54-minute mark. Mary Kay Meintzer assisted on Holan’s goal at 64:10.

WSU substitute Lynette Dickerson scored her first collegiate goal at 73 minutes. She rebounded a shot that Tari Beck knocked off Tigers goal-keeper Robyn Bilski. The Cougars dropped their third consecutive match.

Nicole Highfill scored a pair of first-half goals to lead New Mexico to a 2-0 win over GU at the Lobos’ Invitational in Albuquerque.

Sarah Burton and April Herrity had assists for UNM, which outshot GU 19-4.

Darcy Neil’s penalty kick at the 58-minute mark gave host Central Washington its final boost during a 2-1 non-conference win over Whitworth (3-3) at Ellensburg.

The Wildcats also scored midway through the first half on Aron Hamilton’s pass to Kerry Moffett. The Pirates broke through with 2 minutes left, as Chrissane Roseleip fed Haley Nichols.

Cross country

Boise State swept the team titles at the Whitman Invitational at Fort Walla Walla Park.

Boise’s men finished 1-5 to tally a perfect 15 points. BSU’s women finished 2-3-5 to score 19 points to the 47 of runner-up Washington State.

Josh Danielson won the 8-kilometer men’s race in 24 minutes, 48 seconds. Jon Neill of runner-up Gonzaga finished sixth in 26:02.

Jessica Bissonnette of the host Missionaries won the 5K women’s race in 18:13.

Men’s soccer

At Vancouver, Chris Atkins assisted on the Penguins’ first goal and scored the final goal as Clark CC (1-1-0) defeated Community Colleges of Spokane 5-4.

Doug Birdtail scored twice and hit the crossbar twice for the Sasquatch (1-1-0, 4-2).
