Angels Continue To Nose Dive

Associated Press

American League

The California Angels lost their eighth straight game Friday night, 8-3 to the Texas Rangers, and dropped a game out of first place in the A.L. West when the Seattle Mariners overcame the visiting Oakland Athletics 10-7.

California, which began the game tied with Seattle, had been in first place the last 79 days.

The Angels’ 26th loss in 34 games also dropped them into a tie with New York for the A.L. wild card spot. The Yankees were rained out Friday night in their game against Detroit.

Indians 5, Royals 3 Kansas City, Mo.

Orel Hershiser won his eighth game in his last 10 starts and Cleveland beat Kansas City for its 94th victory, its highest win total in 20 years.

White Sox 5, Twins 4 (10) Minneapolis

Two Minnesota errors in the 10th inning set up Lance Johnson for the game-winning hit as Chicago beat Minnesota.

With one out, third baseman Scott Leius threw wildly to first on a soft grounder by Ron Karkovice.

Pinch runner Norberto Martin stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Matt Walbeck. Johnson followed with a soft line single to right off Pat Mahomes (4-10) as the White Sox remained perfect in seven games against the Twins this season.

Orioles 10, Brewers 3 Milwaukee

Cal Ripken homered and drove in a season-high five runs and Harold Baines hit his 300th career homer in Baltimore’s rout of Milwaukee.

Bobby Bonilla and Rafael Palmeiro also homered for Baltimore, which won its third straight.

Palmeiro led off the ninth with his career-high 38th home run, off Sid Roberson. That’s the most home runs by an Oriole since Frank Robinson hit 49 in 1966.

Howdy, Cal!

A fan ran onto the field at Milwaukee’s County Stadium and shook Cal Ripken’s hand before being tackled and led away by security.

The man, in his 20s, bolted from the seats along the third-base line and sprinted out to the Baltimore shortstop with two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the third inning of the Orioles game with Milwaukee.
