Autopsy Released On Terrell

Compiled From Wire Services

Former Arizona football player Damon Terrell died after an air bubble created by the removal of a catheter got into his heart, according to an autopsy report.

Terrell, 21, died Sept. 7 after spending four weeks at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., where he was hospitalized after collapsing during a preseason conditioning run.

According to the autopsy report, Terrell officially died from complications of exertional rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which muscles break down. The condition is common among active athletes, particularly marathon runners, said Bruce Parks, Pima County’s chief medical examiner.

In Parks opinion, the bubble was “the terminal event” that led to Terrell’s death. There were several other complications that led to Terrell’s deteriorating condition at the time of his death, Parks reported.

George Humphrey, a UMC spokesman, declined to comment on the autopsy report and on whether hospital workers improperly performed standard procedures when removing Terrell’s catheter.

Statutory rape charges against two members of the Idaho State University football team and two former players will be dropped because the alleged victims refuse to testify, a prosecutor says.

Bannock County prosecutor Mark Hiedeman said Ike Johnson, 22, and Thomas Washington, 21, and former players Sam Carter and Derrick Carter, both 22, have agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor battery.

Former Idaho State basketball player Jim Potter, who completed a four-year career as ISU’s secondleading rebounder and fourth in scoring last season, is playing professional basketball in Belgium.

Potter, a 6-9 forward, is playing in Charleroi, a city in the southwestern portion of the country and 2 hours north of Paris.
