Idaho Cruises Past Boise State

College volleyball

Idaho rolled over Boise State Saturday in Moscow, Idaho, sweeping the Broncos 15-7, 15-5, 15-4 in a Big Sky volleyball match.

The Vandals needed only 75 minutes to put an end to Boise State’s ten-match winning streak in front of a season-high 1,359 fans inside Memorial Gym. It was Idaho’s ninth straight win over the Broncos dating back to the 1991 season.

Teammates Beth Craig and Tzvetelina Yanchulova gave Idaho all the firepower it would need.

The freshman Craig led the Vandals in kills with 15 and also had a hitting percentage of .419.

Yanchulova recorded her 48th consecutive double-kill game with 14 and chipped in defensively with a team-high 18 digs.

The Vandals held Boise State (1-1, 10-4) to an .080 hitting percentage.

The win moved Idaho into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time consecutive home-court wins list with 38. Idaho moved ahead of Penn State (1987-89) and needs just four more victories to move into a tie for fifth place. Florida University holds the record with 58 consecutive home-court wins.

Idaho (2-0, 12-2) has now won six straight matches and will travel to Spokane to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Shannon Wyckoff had 19 kills and 16 digs to lead 12th-ranked Washington State (4-0, 11-0) to a 9-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-12 win over 11th-ranked Arizona State (1-2, 7-2) in a Pacific-10 Conference match at Tempe, Ariz.

Keren Oigman added 17 kills and 13 digs, Elis Arias 14 kills and 13 digs, and Sarah Silvernail 14 kills, 10 digs and eight blocks for the Cougars.

Senior All-American Christine Garner had seven kills and two aces as the Sun Devils won the first game. She finished with 27 kills and 10 digs. ASU led the fourth game 7-1 and 12-6, but back-to-back Arias kills broke a 12-all tie as WSU scored the match’s final nine points.

A pair of kills punctuated Yakima Valley CC’s comeback as the Indians held off North Idaho College 14-16, 17-15, 11-15, 15-6, 15-13 in a non-league match at Yakima.

The Cardinals led the fifth game in the late stages, but couldn’t hold on. Teena Fortin had 19 digs and nine blocks, Jennifer Downing 17 kills and Chris Brozik four aces for NIC.

Penny Sneddon had three aces in the fifth game as visiting Idaho State (1-1, 8-4) beat Eastern Washington 10-15, 15-6, 15-12, 10-15, 15-6 in a Big Sky Conference match.

Tammy Hunter had 19 kills and 13 digs, and Kathy Goods 18 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks for the Bengals. Kim Exner led the Eagles (0-2, 3-10) with 18 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks, while Jaime Dotson added 61 assists and 25 digs.
