Obituaries

Bette Cox Deer Park

Service for Bette Helen (Schultz) Cox, former owner, editor and publisher of the Tri-County Tribune in Deer Park, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church in Deer Park. Inurnment will be at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cox, 71, died Monday at Deaconess Medical Center from an cerebral hemorrhage. She was born in Hinsdale, Mont.

She received an education degree from Western Montana College and taught sixth grade in Townsend, Mont., before she took a job at Fort George Wright.

In 1945 she married William Cox. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1995. Mr. Cox died March 16.

From 1953 to 1983 the Coxes were the owners of the Tri-County Tribune in Deer Park.

Mrs. Cox was a member of the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, was the secretary of the Deer Park Chapter of the Washington Pilots Association and the Association of Deer Park Festivals, director of Deer Park Civic Center, co-chairman of Deer Park Junior Miss Association, chairman of Deer Park Community Health Services, charter member of Deer Park Winter Festival, member of the Deer Park Float Association and was named Deer Park’s outstanding citizen in 1971 and 1980.

She served on the Deer Park City Council in 1994 and was re-elected in 1995. She served as Deer Park’s representative on the state Economic Development Council.

She and her husband were presented with the Inland Northwest Hometown Heroes Award in 1995. She had also worked as editor of the Deer Park School District newsletter for five years.

She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Bay of Pasco and Jeanice Schmick of Prosser, Wash.; one son, Jim Cox of Wilbur, Wash; two sisters, Jeanette Squires of Richland and Harriet Anderson of Great Falls, Mont.; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the William E. and Betty S. Cox Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Deer Park Branch of Washington Trust Bank.

Ida ‘Bonnie’ Bongiorni Stanwood, Wash.

Graveside services for Ida “Bonnie” Bongiorni, 83, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Wilson Creek (Wash.) Cemetery. Gilbertson Funeral Home in Stanwood, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Bongiorni, who was born in Wilson Creek, died Sunday in Stanwood, where she had lived for the past few months. She had previously lived in Moses Lake.

She graduated from Wilson Creek High School and Sacred Heart School of Nursing.

She went to work at Sacred Heart Hospital in the early 1960s and retired from there, specializing in geriatrics.

Miss Bongiorni is survived by one sister, Elda Gordon of Fairfield, Calif.; and one brother, Henry Bongiorni of Othello, Wash.

Harold Tiffany Hope, Idaho

Memorial service for Harold A. Tiffany, 95, will be today at 2 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tiffany, who was born in Camas, Wash., died Tuesday.

He worked for the Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill in Camas for 14 years before owning the Plymouth Agency and an automotive garage.

He later moved to California and worked for Crown Zellerbach again before retiring after 14 years.

Mr. Tiffany moved to Hope after his retirement and was a member of the Nazarene Church in Sandpoint.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, E. Rene, in 1987.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Antonie; one son, Boyd Tiffany of California; two brothers, Jess of California and Howard of Colville, Wash.; two sisters, Dorothy Camets of Camas and Dorcus Resleff of Ridgefield, Wash; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Marie Hughes St. Maries

Mass of Christian Burial for Marie E. Hughes, 77, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hughes, who was born in Pasco, died Wednesday.

She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Spokane, then worked as a nurse in Bremerton and San Diego during World War II, and later in Colorado. She moved to St. Maries in 1961 and worked for a local doctor before becoming a public health nurse.

Mrs. Hughes worked at Valley Vista Convalescent Center and Ritzville (Wash.) Memorial Hospital before retiring in 1974.

She was a member of the Democratic Women’s Central Committee, the League of Women Voters, the Idaho Nurses Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Schuler, in 1942. Her second marriage ended in divorce.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Howard; two sons, Hugh Gannon of St. Maries and Dan Gannon of Elk; three daughters, Margaret Newby of Grangeville, Idaho, and Elizabeth Ryon and Kathie Hobbs, both of Oregon; one stepson, Mart Hughes of Oregon; three stepdaughters, Lorna Hughes of Seattle, and Ann Hughes and Marjorie Dudley, both of Oregon; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Beverly Parente Spokane

Service for Beverly Ann Parente, 67, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Cremation will follow.

Mrs. Parente, who was born in Seattle, died Monday.

She had lived in Spokane for 60 years and graduated from Spokane Community College. She worked as a preschool teacher.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Mrs. Parente is survived by two daughters, Lori Chaney and Karen Heinamen, both of Spokane; one son, Mike Pherigo of Hatton, Wash.; four brothers, Marvin and John Gourley, both of Spokane, and Darrell and Ted Gourley, both of Santa Barbara, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Marian Wise Pullman

Visitation for service for Marian A. Wise, 84, will be at 2 p.m. today at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Burial will follow at Pullman City Cemetery.

Mrs. Wise, a longtime Pullman resident, died Monday at Latah Health Services in Moscow, Idaho. She was born in Whitman County.

She graduated from Pullman High School and Washington State College.

She taught school in Whitman County until she married Marion C. Wise in 1941. She and her husband farmed.

Mrs. Wise was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Pullman and the Friendly Neighbors Club.

Her husband died in 1990.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Kreager of Pullman and Nancy Preston of Bowling Green, Ohio; four grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Becker Jr. Post Falls

Service for Robert J. Becker Jr., 55, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Becker, who was born in South Dakota, died Wednesday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Lewiston, later serving in the Air Force for eight years. He returned to Lewiston after his military discharge and worked for Potlatch.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1975 and had worked at Kaiser Aluminum for the past nine years.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Karmon; three sons, Darrick and Darcy Becker, both of Post Falls, and David; two daughters, Sherry Williams of Washington and Lori Johnson of Idaho; his mother, Carole Becker of Lewiston; two brothers, Jim and Dick, both of Lewiston; five sisters, Evelyn Hill of Richland, Mary Bailey of Spokane, Judy Kelly and Averal Willard, both of Lewiston, and Lila Puckett of Nez Perce, Idaho; and numerous grandchildren.

Sally Martin Spokane

Memorial service for Sally A. Martin, 41, will be at 3 p.m. today at Valley Fourth Memorial Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martin, who died April 4, was born in Coeur d’Alene.

She graduated from Central Valley High School and owned the Greenacres Dry Cleaners. She had lived in Spokane for 32 years.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Martin; two sons, Jerry and James Martin, both of Spokane; her parents, Ron and Rose Foulston of Spokane; four sisters, Sherri Mason, Sue Wilson, Ronda Stapleton and Rene Foulston, all of Spokane; and her grandmother, Ola Prince of Spokane.

Margarete Johnston Kingston, Idaho

Service for Margarete Johnston, 76, will be today at 10 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnston, who was born in Alberta, died Monday. She moved to the Silver Valley from Coeur d’Alene in 1941 and was a mother and homemaker.

She was a member of several bowling leagues.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Bud; two sons, Douglas of Kingston and Duane of Pinehurst; a daughter, Sandra Munds of Chicago; three sisters, Thelma Kamlin of Spokane, and Lucille Hall and Florence Mayhew, both of Medford, Ore.; and six grandchildren.

Naomi Buchanan Hunters, Wash.

Service for Naomi Grace Buchanan, 80, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Hunters Presbyterian Church. Cremation will follow. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Buchanan, a 30-year Hunters resident, died Wednesday in Spokane. She was born in Creston, Wash.

She graduated from high school in Creston and from Cheney Normal College, where she received a teaching certificate.

She taught in Fruitland, Wash., and Hunters for many years.

In 1941 she married Lawrence Buchanan in Creston. They had lived in Fruitland, Davenport and Cedonia, Wash., and moved to Hunters in 1963.

Her husband died in 1990.

Mrs. Buchanan was a member of Hunters Presbyterian Church, the Rebekah Lodge and Enterprise Grange No. 784.

Survivors include three sons, Larry Buchanan of Everett, Merlin Buchanan of Colbert and Ron Buchanan of Elk; two sisters, Bonnie Wolfrum and Celia Buck, both of Davenport, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dana Peetz Colfax, Wash.

Memorial service for Dana Suzanne Peetz, a 17-year-old Colfax High School student, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Colfax. Burial will follow. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Peetz died Tuesday in an auto accident on Highway 195 about six miles south of Colfax. She was born in Spokane.

She had lived in Spokane until the fifth grade, when she moved to Olympia. She had lived in Colfax for the past 1-1/2 years.

She was a member of the Honor Society and received the Academic Achievement Award at Colfax High School in the 1994-1995 school year. She was an Academic All-American at Capital High School in Olympia and was involved with Future Farmers of America.

Miss Peetz played the violin and competed solo and ensemble in high school choir. She had been a page for state Rep. Dennis Dellwo in Olympia.

Survivors include her father and stepmother, Robert and Connie Peetz of Deer Park; her mother and stepfather, Patricia and Ray Nelson of Colfax; two brothers, Brent Peetz of Spokane and Jason Peetz of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Marta Peetz of Spokane, Jana Welp of Altus, Okla., and Sandra Jackson of Great Falls, Mont.; four half-brothers, David Talbot and Bill Fay, both of Deer Park, and Edward and Larry Nelson, both of Rosalia, Wash.; her grandparents, William and Dorothy Peetz of The Dalles, Ore.; and her stepgrandmother, Myrtle Brodrick of Deer Park.

Richard Pedey Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Richard G. Pedey, 65, will be today at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry.

Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pedey, who was born in Montana, died Tuesday.

He grew up and attended schools in Bonners Ferry and Copeland, Idaho, later serving in the Army in Korea.

After his military discharge he returned to North Idaho and worked in the timber industry. He later moved to the Silver Valley and worked in the mines before returning to Bonners Ferry in 1963.

He retired from the timber industry in the 1980s due to health problems.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Shirley; seven children, Monte Hawks and Rhonda Damon, both of Riggins, Idaho, Steven Hawks and Tracie Bennett, both of Bonners Ferry, Shannon Zipfel of Spokane, Toni Schmidt of Creston, British Columbia, and Shelley Munson of Sandpoint; three brothers, Vic Pedey of Spokane, Frank Pedey of Oregon and Harvey Pedey of Bonners Ferry; two sisters, Eileen Fairchild of Oregon and Phyllis Taylor of Spokane; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
