West Valley Gets Edge With Returning Golfers

Last year, three girls from Valley Frontier League golf teams qualified for state.

Two of them, West Valley senior Angela Cline and sophomore Melanie LaRouque, return.

The third, East Valley’s Brenda Hall, graduated and is now a member of the University of Idaho team.

Hall finished fourth in the fall Big Sky tournament and Knight coach Mike Malsam bemoans her loss.

“The gravy train’s over,” said Malsam.

Of six golfers, three are beginners. Two of the other three, said Malsam, have state qualifying potential.

They are Sarah Phillips, a senior, and Tian Howald, a sophomore. Another sophomore, Katie Sulpizio, is a second-year golfer.

Rounding out the Knight team are freshemn Andrea Maughn, Molly Blackwell and sophomore Tiffany Ferrara.

“This will be a rebuilding year, no doubt about it,” said Malsam. “Of six teams in league we’re probably fifth, if we beat Pullman.”

West Valley returns three players, including the state qualifiers Cline, LaRoque and senior K.C. Zichler.

Rounding out the varsity is freshman beginner Sherise Roderick.
