Casino Meeting Set For Aug. 12

The public can comment on the Kalispel Tribe’s casino proposal Aug. 12 in Airway Heights.

Although the Airway Heights City Council will run the hearing, comments will be allowed from residents throughout the region.

The tribe, with Carnival Casino and Hotel of Florida, is looking to build a $17 million gambling center on 40 acres inside the city limits.

The hearing at Sunset School, 12824 W. 12th, will start at 7 p.m. and likely run until 10.

A key vote on the casino belongs to members of the local City Council. Ultimately, the governor’s office must decide if it will arrange a compact to permit gambling.

The council is not expected to vote on the proposal that evening, said City Manager Mike Patterson.

“We really should make a decision that night,” said Airway Heights Mayor Don Harmon, who supports the casino. Some council members, he noted, believe in waiting a bit longer to evaluate options.
