Spokane Chiefs Player Leads U.S. Into Semifinals

Spokane Chiefs forward Ty Jones has played a huge role in boosting the United States Select 17 hockey team into the semifinals of the Air Canada Pacific Cup being played this week at split sites in Nelson and Castlegar, British Columbia.

In a 6-5 win over Canada early in the week, Jones registered a goal and an assist. He came back a day later and picked up Player-of-theGame honors after scoring one goal and assisting on three others in a 5-3 win over Finland.

Jones, from Eagle River, Alaska, was also named Player of the Game for scoring two goals in a 7-0 win over Japan that vaulted the U.S. into a semifinal-round matchup against Finland. Japan and Canada will meet in the other semifinal, with the finals scheduled for Sunday.

Vandals get Banks

Tacoma Community College’s Cameron Banks, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, has orally committed to play men’s basketball at the University of Idaho.

Banks averaged 19.1 points and 7.9 rebounds as Tacoma placed second in the NWAACC Western Region with an 11-3 record.

Banks is expected to sign with the Vandals in the November early signing period.

Chaney takes hiatus

Lara Chaney, a 6-foot-7 center on Idaho’s women’s basketball team, will not play this season. Chaney has returned home to California to be with her mother, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Chaney redshirted last year. She is expected to return to Idaho for the 1997-98 season.

UI coach Julie Holt said Chaney might play at Contra Costa College near her home so she won’t miss two playing seasons.

UI tickets

Tickets for Idaho football and men’s basketball games are now available through G&B Select-a-Seat outlets in Spokane, Pullman, Tri-Cities, Coeur d’Alene, Moscow, Lewiston and Kalispell.

Tickets can still be purchased by calling 1-800-Vandal9.

Spokane golfers ousted

Spokane lost its remaining two golfers in the PNWGA Junior Boy’s Amateur when Reid Hatley and Kyle Schwahn both lost quarterfinal matches at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Ore., by identical scores of 3 and 2.

Hatley was beaten Jordon Bombier of Grande Prarie, Alberta, and Schwahn was ousted by Portland’s Anthony Arvidson.

Arvidson and Bombier then went on to post semifinal-round victories

Jason Gore, from Valencia, Calif., tied the competitive course record with a 5-under-par 67 at Redmond’s Sahalee Country Club and took the lead in the Northwest Players’ Championship.

The round left Gore at 141, three strokes under par for 36 holes and two better than first-round leader Mike Ruiz, of Las Vegas.

Colville’s Kent Brown tacked a 76 onto his first-round 77 and was tied for 27th at 153. Spokane’s Darin Vaughn was two strokes back at 155 following a second-round 78.
