Christ Lutheran Gives Thanks For Work Opportunities

Nina Culver Correspondent

Christ Lutheran Church, 13009 E. Broadway, will be holding special services Sunday in which the focus will be on giving thanks for work.

The concept behind the services, at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., is that work is a gift from God, says pastor Tom Shelly.

Church members made a list of parishioners’ occupations as an important way to give thanks, Shelly says. The list is a way of making work more tangible, while also highlighting the diversity of the parishioners, says Shelley.

Shelly quotes Saint Paul in saying, “The body has many parts, but each part has a different function.” While parishioners may have such vastly different occupations, such as a truck driver and a doctor, each is important, and all the parts must come together to work for the common good, Shelly says.

Shelly says he believes that having a job you like is similar to having a good marriage, with the benefits you reap flowing into other areas of your life. Part of the service will be spent praying that the parishioners like their work and benefit from it.

AWANA meetings start Thursday

The Crossroads Baptist Church, 509 N. Sullivan, is starting up its AWANA program on Thursday. AWANA is a youth outreach program that meets every Thursday from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No advance registration is necessary.

The program runs through the school year and is open to grades K-12. Children will spend their time studying age appropriate scripture, playing games, having fun theme nights, and competing against kids in AWANA programs in other area churches. Each week the pastor or a guest speaker will present a message of faith to all participants.

Each child must pay 50 cents per night in dues, and pay for the books he or she uses. Uniforms are encouraged. For more information call 926-2514.

Valley Alliance hosts concert

The Calvary Construction Company, a gospel quartet, will be performing at the Valley Alliance Church, 11111 E. 16th, on Friday at 7 p.m.

Louie Wilson, Don Speight, Steve Johnson, and Rod Curtis are known for their smooth southern gospel music and their mix of contemporary and classic songs.

A homemade pie social will follow the concert. The evening is free and open to everyone, but a free will offering will be collected.

Pastor Don Smithgall has promised that if more than 140 people attend the concert, he will be the recipient of a pie in the face.

Bible study classes begin

The Berean Bible Church will be holding regular Bible study classes for adults this fall at the church, 10910 E. Boone. The classes use the Precept method, which uses an in depth, inductive method of study of specific books in the Bible.

A class on 1 Peter will be held every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning this week. A class on Romans Part II will be held every Tuesday from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. starting Sept. 10.

Class participants will be required to purchase workbooks and other supplies, which are generally low cost. No advance registration is required. The Romans II class will offer free child care. For more information, contact Kay David at 924-2821.
