For Comfort, Just Pull Wool Over Your Feet

Bryan Chitwood Special To Outdoors

Product: Smartwool Cycling Socks

Description: Smartwool manufactures an entire line of Merino wool-synthetic blend sporting socks which are machine washable and dryable. The 80% wool-20% synthetic blend (Lycra and stretchable nylon) makes for a soft, comfortable and durable sock, with the synthetics being used mainly in the heels and toes for reinforcement and stretch.

Pro: These are the best cycling socks I’ve ever worn for several reasons. The wool is soft and comfortable, the fit is excellent, they’re extremely durable, they breathe and wick well, hold their shape…and don’t stink like synthetics. In addition, you can machine wash and dry them. I can’t wait to try other socks in the line for hiking, skiing, running, skating and more.

Con: They cost a little bit more than synthetic or cotton socks. Also, they’re great on a road bike ride, but a little additional cushioning might be nice for mountain biking.

Comments: I’ve used these socks for cycling, running and cross training for over six months, and remain impressed at how well they hold up and how little odor they accumulate, even when worn several days running (so to speak). In addition, the Merino wool has a wonderful hand.
