Spartans Hire Coach

Dave Baldwin, the Cal State Northridge football coach the last two seasons, was hired to head the program at San Jose State.

Baldwin, 41, who replaces the retired John Ralston, was the receivers coach at San Jose State from 1980-83 under Jack Elway and also served as an assistant offensive coach at Stanford.

University of Southern Mississippi football coach Jeff Bower has declined a job at the University of Wyoming.

The Wyoming job opened Nov. 22 when coach Joe Tiller announced he was taking the head coaching position at Purdue University.

Grambling State University has expelled five students, including four football players, accused of raping a 15-year-old girl Nov. 9 in a campus dormitory. The action came after hearings by Grambling’s judiciary board, the university said in a statement.

Iowa State junior running back Troy Davis has been selected the college football player of the year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio.
