Idaho Stands Tall Against Simon Fraser Jackman Scores 27 Points As Vandals Overpower Naia Clansmen 95-50

Andrew Longeteig Correspondent

Idaho finally played someone they could match up with in height Sunday afternoon. NAIA’s Simon Fraser, though, couldn’t match up with Idaho’s skill.

Senior forward Jason Jackman scored 27 points to lead the Big West Conference Vandals over the Clansmen 95-50 before 1,268 fans at the Kibbie Dome Sunday afternoon in an exhibition matchup. The 6-foot-9 Jackman shot 9 of 13 from the field and hit 9-of-10 free throws in 25 minutes of action.

The Vandals’ superior defensive quickness forced 27 Simon Fraser turnovers - including 16 steals - leading to 39 points. The Clansmen could only muster 15 first-half points on 31 percent shooting against Idaho’s aggressive defensive pressure.

Idaho’s lack of height wasn’t a factor either. The Vandals outrebounded the Clansmen 40-28, thanks to Eddie Turner and Reggie Rose, who tallied eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

Idaho, although Jackman was its only player above 6-5, also kept Simon Fraser’s 6-11 junior forward Sean Ramjagsingh in check. The Vandals held him to three points - nine below his season average.

“I was proud of our guys for about the first 30 minutes,” Idaho coach Kermit Davis said. “Our team is starting to get better.”

“Even if we’re up 30, there’s no excuse for mistakes,” said Rose, who also had seven points and five steals.

Simon Fraser sophomore forward David Wahl scored a team-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed in how we played,” said Wahl, who at 6-foot-7 is the second-tallest player for the Clansmen. “We know we’re an NAIA school, but we just wanted to come out and play hard.”

The only other double-figure scorer for Simon Fraser was 6-6, 260-pound freshman Richard Anderson who scored 10 points and, along with Ramjagsingh, led the Clansmen with five rebounds. Anderson, a back-up forward, scored all of the Clansmen’s points off the bench.

Idaho shot a season-best 55 percent from the field, including 8 of 17 from 3-point range. Nine different Vandals scored.

Junior college transfers Marcus Wallace and Jarrett Wendt sparked the Vandals, each scoring 12 of Idaho’s 39 points off the bench.

Idaho (2-3) gets a break after playing five games in 11 days. However, when the Vandals return to action Saturday, they’ll face undefeated border-rival Washington State in Pullman. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.

Davis said 6-foot-8 forward Kevin Byrne, who suffered a sprained ankle against Southwest Missouri State, will be ready to play against WSU.
