Vatican Press Raps Surrogate Birth

The case of the British woman who carried her daughter’s embryo to term is “reprehensible” and ethically wrong, the Vatican newspaper said Monday.

“It is above all the human person who is wounded and injured in their dignity,” L’Osservatore Romano wrote.

The 51-year-old grandmother acted as a surrogate for an embryo created from the eggs of her daughter and the sperm of her daughter’s husband. The genetic mother was born without a womb.

The baby girl was born Thursday in northern England.

The newspaper said the in vitro fertilization violated “God’s plan,” even though the married couple were the genetic parents of the child.
