Floyd Paulsen Moscow, Idaho

Graveside service for Floyd Alvin Paulsen, 87, was held at Newport (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Paulsen, a 42-year Moscow resident, died Wednesday.

He was born in Newport and graduated from high school there.

He graduated from Washington State College with degrees in mathematics and education. He received a master of natural science degree from the University of Idaho and participated in the National Science Foundation upgrading of science education.

Mr. Paulsen was a chemistry, math and physics teacher in Cheney, Lamont, Bridgeport, Colfax, Newport, Pasco, Moxee City and Tekoa, Wash., and Coeur d’Alene and Moscow, Idaho.

He retired in 1974 from Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

Mr. Paulsen also worked with the Army Air Corps during World War II at Washington State College and at Farragut Naval Station.

His wife, Mary (Archer) Paulsen, died in 1951.

Mr. Paulsen is survived by two daughters, Linda Karr of Newport and Beth Paulsen of Moscow; a son, Tom Paulsen of Elk Grove, Calif.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ferdinand Justice Moses Lake

Rosary service for Ferdinand Raymond Justice, 64, will be at 5 p.m. today at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories in Moses Lake. Burial Mass is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Moses Lake. Burial will be at Pioneer Memorial Gardens in Moses Lake.

Mr. Justice died Thursday.

He was born near Grenora, N.D.

He married Phyllis Stady in 1953 in Sydney, Mont. They lived in North Dakota and in 1956 moved to Schrag, Wash., where he farmed.

He retired in 1990, and they moved to Moses Lake.

Mr. Justice was a member of the Moses Lake Grange.

Survivors include his wife; a son, DuWayne Justice of Moses Lake; two daughters, Debbie Baulne of Moses Lake and Cindy Nelson of Spokane; a brother, Vernon Justice of Dagmar, Mont.; two sisters, Mary Lukenbill of Sacramento, Calif., and Delores Barkie of Williston, N.D.; and four grandchildren.

Georganne Randall Colfax, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Georganne (Baber) Randall, 79, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery.

Mrs. Randall, who died Friday, was born in Colfax.

She graduated from Colfax High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in microbiology from Washington State University.

She worked as a bacteriologist at St. Ignatius Hospital in Colfax.

She married Sam Randall in 1937. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Randall was a member of Phi Beta Kappa scholastic honor society and was a Sunday school teacher and organist at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was also a volunteer for the Whitman County Library.

Survivors include four nephews, Bernard, William, Gregory and Ken Baber; a niece, Alison Baber Webb; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitman Hospital Foundation.

Richard Burns Spokane

Memorial service for Richard L. Burns, 72, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Fourth Memorial Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burns, a longtime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He was born in Yakima and graduated from Davis High School in Yakima.

He worked as a watchmaker in Yakima for Crother’s Jewelers from 1948 to 1950.

He moved to Spokane in 1950 and operated the Diamond Lake Resort for two years. He then worked for Darigold as a wholesale truck driver until 1971, when he retired due to a health disability.

Mr. Burns attended Fourth Memorial Church.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Burns; four sons, Bruce Burns of Graham, Wash., Terry Burns of Tacoma, Larry Burns of Deer Park and Ronald Burns of Lancaster, Calif.; his mother, Myrtle Woodhouse of Spokane; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fourth Memorial Church.

Melvin ‘Tiny’ Sunderland Spokane

Service for Melvin “Tiny” Sunderland, 50, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Sunderland, who was born Glasgow, Ky., died Saturday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and attended Spokane Falls Community College and Spokane Community College. He received a degree in civil engineering.

He and his father owned Sunderland Excavating.

Mr. Sunderland was a member of The Associated General Contractors and the International Union of Operating Engineers.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara Sunderland; a daughter, Holly Case, and a son, Neil Sunderland, both of Spokane; his mother, Mattie Sunderland of Spokane; a brother, Randy Sunderland of Spokane; and two sisters, Mary Wickersham of Renton, Wash., and Vera Knowles of Martinez, Calif.

H.E. ‘Bert’ Daugherty Kellogg

Service for H.E. “Bert” Daugherty, 85, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Wallace Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Daugherty, who was born in West Virginia, died Saturday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1929 and later worked in the bookkeeping and timber industries.

He joined the Navy in 1939 and served as chief radioman aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga during World War II. After his military service he worked as a radio engineer and announcer at KWAL station in Osburn, Idaho, where he helped set up the antenna system for TV reception in Wallace, Silverton and Osburn.

Mr. Daugherty went on to work as a cable TV technician for Zanetti Bros. until retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelle.

Survivors include a son, Robert Daugherty of Colorado; two brothers, Howard Daugherty of Priest River, Idaho, and Durbin Daugherty of Murray, Idaho; and two grandsons, Dan and Ben.

Eva Jantz Ritzville, Wash.

Visitation for Eva Erma Jantz, a former Spokane resident, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Menno Mennonite Church near Ritzville. Vault burial will follow at the Menno Mennonite Cemetery near Ritzville.

Mrs. Jantz, 84, died Sunday.

She was born near Menno, Wash., and graduated from high school in Odessa, Wash.

In 1942, she married Walter Jantz. They lived in Seattle and Tacoma for a few years and returned to the Menno community to farm in 1946.

They retired to Spokane in 1972, and Mr. Jantz died in 1985. Mrs. Jantz returned to Ritzville in 1991.

She is survived by two brothers, Clarence Schrag of Seattle and Leslie Schrag of Vancouver, Wash.

Gladys (Cauvel) Minden Spokane

Memorial service for Gladys M. (Cauvel) Minden, 91, will be at 11 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Minden died Thursday.

She was born in Spokane and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Minden is survived by a son, Gerald Minden of Hollister, Calif.; a daughter, Joyce Sutton of Spokane; a sister, Marjorie Watkins of Lake Oswego, Ore.; four brothers, Benjamin, Randall and Milton Cauvel, all of Spokane, and John Cauvel of Tacoma; and three grandchildren.

Elizabeth Ackerman Dusty, Wash.

Service for Elizabeth “Betty” Ackerman, 87, was Monday at Country Bible Church near Dusty. Burial was at the Dusty Cemetery.

Mrs. Ackerman, who was born in LaCrosse, Wash., died Friday.

She graduated from high school in LaCrosse and attended nursing school. In 1930, she married Henry Ackerman in Wallace.

They lived in the Dusty area and owned a wheat farm for 30 years. They also owned and operated the Dusty store and service station.

Mrs. Ackerman was a member of the Country Bible Church and the Dusty BB Club and served as secretary of the Dusty Fire District for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Robert “Bob” Ackerman of Snoqualmie, Wash., and Richard “Dick” Ackerman of Richland; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

James ‘Clayton’ Applegate Spokane

Memorial service for James C. “Clayton” Applegate will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Applegate, 89, died Saturday.

He was born in Minneapolis and had lived in Spokane for 39 years.

He retired from Pacific Northwest Bell in 1970 as district plant manager after 42 years.

Mr. Applegate was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Audrey Applegate; a daughter, Donna Kephart of Hemet, Calif.; a son, David Applegate of Renton, Wash.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandsons.

Tinsy Rector Moscow, Idaho

Service for Tinsy M. Rector, 92, was Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Potlatch, Idaho. Burial was at the Moscow Cemetery.

Mrs. Rector, who died Friday, was born in Hannibal, Mo.

She married Jack Poston in 1921 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. He died in 1946.

She married Earl Rector in 1958 in Palouse, Wash. They lived in Potlatch.

Mrs. Rector worked for Potlatch Forests Inc. during World War II and at the Potlatch Mercantile from 1947 to 1963. She also worked at Trueman’s Thrift in the Potlatch mall and retired in 1969.

Earl Record died in 1966.

Mrs. Recor was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Royal Neighbors, the Banner Club and the Birthday Club. She was a charter member of the Potlatch Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a son, Larry Poston of Omak, Wash.; five daughters, Zoe Strom of Bayview, Idaho, Lorraine Cann and Patricia Hill, both of Libby, Mont., Lorretta Vowels of Princeton, Idaho, and Patricia Poston of Spokane; a half-sister, Colleen Berger of Westport, Wash.; 22 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Rollin Drinkard Spokane

Service for Rollin E. Drinkard, 86, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Drinkard, who died Friday, was born in Chewelah, Wash.

He was a 54-year Spokane resident and worked as a truck driver for several trucking companies, including Mitchell Transportation.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union.

His wife, Eva, died in 1980.

He is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Edna LaBute Spokane

Service for Edna M. LaBute, 87, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. LaBute died Saturday.

She was born in St. Louis and had lived in Spokane for 65 years.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Hillyard Baptist Church.

Her husband, Joseph LaBute, died in 1963.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Bauder of Boise and Patty Santos of Spokane; a son, John LaBute of Deer Park; a brother, George Brumley of Priest River, Idaho; four sisters, Ethel Peterson, Ellen Linton and Evelyn Moore, all of Priest River, and Edith Colborne of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Frances McSweeney Colfax, Wash.

Graveside service for Frances Irene McSweeney, 69, is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. John (Wash.) Cemetery. Inurnment will be at the St. John Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Born in St. John, Mrs. McSweeney died Dec. 9.

In 1946, she married Allen McSweeney in Revere, Wash.

They moved to Colfax in 1974.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mrs. McSweeney is survived by her husband; a daughter, Linda Johnson of Pullman; a son, Steve McSweeney of Colfax; five grandsons and two stepgrandchildren.

Freeman Ziesmer St. Maries

At his request, no service will be held for Freeman L. Ziesmer, 88. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home of St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ziesmer, who was born in Minnesota, died Thursday.

He grew up in Minnesota and served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He moved to St. Maries after his military discharge and worked in the timber industry.

He had worked for St. Maries Lumber Co., the Forest Service and the Idaho Department of Lands before retiring in 1973.

Mr. Ziesmer was a member of the St. Maries Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a son, Jack Powell of Spokane; two daughters, Greta Strain of Fernwood, Idaho, and Peggy Butler of Oregon; five brothers and five sisters, all of Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Emma Pittman Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Emma Lorine Pittman, 82, will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Private burial has occurred. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pittman, who was born in Worley, Idaho, died Saturday.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene from Worley in 1935 and taught school at the Meadow Brook School and Sun-Up Bay School (formerly Mud Bay).

She was a homemaker and a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Pittman was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Rita Miller of Post Falls; a twin brother, Elmer Pierson of Coeur d’Alene; three grandchildren, Laura, Barry and Marilyn; and seven great-grandchildren.

Carrol ‘Carl’ Berry Deer Park

Memorial service for Carrol William “Carl” Berry, 88, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park.

Mr. Berry, who was born in Mountain Home, Iowa, died Sunday.

He worked as a lumber grader and became quality control supervisor for Deer Park Pine/Potlatch Forests Inc. at the Deer Park Mill from 1935 until it closed in 1971.

He had lived in Deer Park for 61 years.

He was involved in organizing the mill workers in Deer Park into their local woodworkers union.

In the early 1930s, he worked as a set hand for Hollywood movies produced by MGM Studios.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ella Berry; three sons; Robert Berry of Deer Park, Duane Berry of Pendleton, Ore., and James Berry of Spokane; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Robert Brownlee Spokane

Memorial service for Robert Byron Brownlee, 31, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brownlee, who died Saturday, was born in Spokane.

He graduated from Mead High School and Eastern Washington University and worked in automotive sales.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his parents, Byron and Phyllis Brownlee of Mead; a sister, Denise Miller of Wenatchee; a brother, Todd Brownlee of Mead; and his grandparents, Lucille Brownlee of Mead and Percy and Pearl Budke of Raymond, Mont.
