Daughter Of Olympic Standout Gains U.S. Speedskating Title

Compiled From Wire Services

Kirstin Holum, a 16-year-old high school student from Waukesha, Wis., is skating fast to catch her mother, four-time Olympic medalist Dianne Holum.

The younger Holum won the 1,500- and 5,000-meter races Sunday to take the women’s U.S. Speedskating All-Around Championship after two days of competition at the Pettit National Ice Center.

It was no surprise that KC Boutiette of Tacoma won his second straight men’s national title. But it was an upset victory for Holum, who dominated by winning three of four races.

Holum, who a day earlier took the 3,000-meter event in 4:19.56, won the 1,500 in 2:05.14 and the 5,000 in 7:30.34, nearly 23 seconds faster than second-place Jennifer Rodriguez of Miami.

Dianne Holum won a gold, two silvers and a bronze in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.

Boutiette, a former in-line skater who made the 1994 Olympic team, won the 1,500 in 1:53.81 and the 10,000 in 14:28.31. He took the 5,000 meters Saturday.
