Pecht Keys West Valley’s 64-62 Win Over Sandpoint

Vinnie Pecht hit a turnaround 8-footer from the key with 7 seconds left to give West Valley a 64-62 non-league boys basketball victory over visiting Sandpoint on Monday night.

Sandpoint called timeout with 4 seconds left to set up a final play, but the Bulldogs’ pass to halfcourt was picked off by Pecht to preserve the win for WV (3-2).

David Boren scored nine of his 12 points on three fourth-quarter 3-pointers to keep the Bulldogs in the see-saw game.

Caleb Bowman led Sandpoint with 16 points.

Josh Sweet erupted off for 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for West Valley.

The 6-foot-6 Pecht finished with 14 points.

The Bulldogs had the leading scorer and leading rebounder, but depth and defense produced the non-league win for the Eagles at home.

Natalie Ward had 12 points and Mary Jo Gill 13 rebounds for Sandpoint (0-7), but only five other Bulldogs scored. WV (4-2) got scoring from eight players, with Dawn Salfer (11) and Angie Kallas (10) leading the way.

The Eagles held Sandpoint to singledigit scoring the first three quarters and had 41 rebounds, 22 on the offensive end.

Youth basketball

The Post Falls Park Department’s annual McDonald’s clinic for youngsters ages 6-12 will be Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s session will be at Seltice Elementary School and Saturday’s at Post Falls High School, both from 10 a.m.-noon. Cost is $15 for both days in advance, $20 at the door (if space is available).

North Idaho College coaches and players will give the instruction. Participants will be admitted free to the Jan. 11 NIC game.
