Hughes Strikes Deal To Buy Northwest Firm

From Staff And Wire Reports

Hughes Electronics Corp. has agreed to pay $141 million for Marine Systems Group of Mukilteo, Wash., a torpedo-making unit of Alliant Techsystems Inc.

In addition to lightweight and heavyweight torpedoes, Marine Systems Group makes underwater surveillance and anti-mine warfare systems. No changes are expected in Marine Systems’ work force of 650 employees in six states, the companies said in announcing their deal.

The deal is expected to close early next year.

The purchase is part of the continuing consolidation of the defense industry. Hughes itself has been reported to be entertaining offers for its defense operations.
