Snowmobiler Shot In Leg On Newman Lake Property

From Staff And Wire Reports

A man riding a snowmobile on private property near Newman Lake was shot in the leg by an angry homeowner Thursday afternoon, sheriff’s deputies said.

Flanked by two small children, the man hobbled into the emergency room at Valley Hospital and Medical Center under his own power.

“I’m fine. I’m fine, honey,” he told his wife.

The man suffered a minor flesh wound to one of his legs, said Sheriff’s Deputy Dave Reagan. The victim’s name and age were not released.

The shooting took place about 4:10 p.m. when the man turned off Mavern Street onto Strong Road, which dead-ends in front of three trailer homes, Reagan said.

As the man turned his snowmobile around to head out, he looked back to see an older man step out of one of the homes holding a rifle, deputies said.

The victim told deputies he heard at least six shots, then felt a pain in his leg.

A second man stepped in front of the snowmobile, blocking the victim’s path as he tried to leave the area, Reagan said.

“He told him not to ride past the ‘No Trespassing’ sign again, or he’d be shot,” the deputy said.

The victim hadn’t noticed the sign, according to Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Kukuruza.

“Even if he was trespassing, that’s no cause to shoot at somebody,” Kukuruza said.

Deputies were investigating the shooting late Thursday, and had made no arrests.

Reagan also noted that it is illegal to ride a snowmobile on a public street.
