Mariners Ink Polonia, Jackson
The Mariners signed two free agents, outfielder Luis Polonia and relief pitcher Mike Jackson, a right-hander.
Polonia accepted a minor-league contract that will pay him $700,000 if he is on the Mariners’ roster. Jackson, who previously played four seasons in Seattle, agreed to an $800,000 salary, plus a possible $400,000 in performance bonuses.
Free-agent pitcher Tim Belcher and the Kansas City Royals agreed to a $975,000, one-year contract.
Left-hander Chris Haney agreed to a $500,000, one-year deal with the Royals.
Left-hander Rheal Cormier and the Montreal Expos agreed to a $950,000, one-year contract.
Baseball players may make their long-awaited counterproposal to owners next week. Union head Donald Fehr said the counteroffer was close to completion, but wouldn’t commit to a definite date next week.
