Leona Caires Coeur d’Alene

Vigil service for Leona Diane Caires, 49, will be today at 7 p.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.

Mrs. Caires, a former Coeur d’Alene educator, was killed Friday in a shooting in her Moses Lake classroom.

She was born in Chicago and grew up in California. She graduated from San Jose State University and later received her master’s degree from the University of Idaho.

Mrs. Caires taught high school in California before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1979. She taught at North Idaho College and tutored high school and college students in her home.

She was hired to teach at Frontier Junior High School in Moses Lake in 1994.

She enjoyed baking, sewing and tennis and was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Tennis Club. She was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church, the National Education Association, the Washington Education Association and the Moses Lake Education Association.

Survivors include her husband of 28 years, Stephen; two sons, Matthew and Damian Caires, both of Pullman; two daughters, Debora Caires of Coeur d’Alene and Victoria Caires of Cheney; her parents, Aubrey and Rita Gray of California; and a brother, Jerry Gray of California.

A Leona Caires Memorial Scholarship has been set up at the Bank of America, Silver Lake Mall Branch, 357 Canfield Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.

Marle Pryor Tacoma

Memorial service for Marle C. Pryor, 90, will be held in Tacoma. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane. Tuell-McKee Funeral Home in Tacoma is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pryor, who was born in Spokane, died Friday in Tacoma, where she had lived for the past 10 years.

She was a homemaker and a former longtime Spokane resident.

She is survived by two sons, Gary Pryor of Tacoma and Ron Pryor of Oregon; one brother, Kenneth Brinnon of Bellevue, Wash.; one sister, Evelyn Jackson of Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Grace Pearson Spokane

Private graveside service for Grace Pearson, 82, will be held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pearson, a longtime Spokane resident, died Monday.

She was born in Tygee, Ind., and was a self-employed beautician.

Her husband, Everett, died in 1959.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan Olson of Spokane; one grandson, one granddaughter and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dolores Lettenmaier Spokane

Funeral Mass for Dolores Rose Lettenmaier, 69, will be today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Genesee, Idaho. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Genesee. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lettenmaier, a longtime Genesee resident, died Sunday of cancer.

She was born in Lorenzo, Idaho, and graduated from Rigby High School. She went on to attend St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Lewiston, graduating in 1947.

Mrs. Lettenmaier worked at the Genesee doctor’s office for years and later as a Latah County public health nurse. She was a state mental health nurse until her retirement in 1986.

She moved to Spokane in 1988 and was active as a volunteer with the Deaconess Ladies Auxiliary and the Chemical Dependency Unit.

She enjoyed golf, bowling and traveling. She was a member of St. Aloysius Parish, the Spokane Ladies Auxiliary No. 51 and the Deaconess Women’s Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E. F. Lettenmaier.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandi Druffel of Spokane; brother, Orville Lange of Twin Falls, Idaho; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Endowment Fund.

Walter ‘Carl’ Conner Harrison, Idaho

Memorial service for Walter C. “Carl” Conner, 79, will be held later at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Harrison. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Conner, who was born in Perry, Iowa, died Saturday after an extended illness.

He moved to Spokane in 1936 and worked as a logger and trucker until 1961, when he founded W.C. Conner Excavating Co. He retired in 1981 and moved to Harrison in 1994.

Mr. Conner enjoyed woodworking and traveling and was a member of the Spokane Eagles Lodge and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; a son, Dale Conner of Spokane; a stepson, William Miller of Arizona; a daughter, Carol Neumann of Seattle; two stepdaughters, Mary Wright of Spokane and Gayle Tharp of Priest River, Idaho; a brother, Oscar Conner of Perry; and a sister, Alma Malek of Spokane.

Harold Harding Mead

Service for Harold D. Harding, 65, is set for 11 a.m. Friday at First Church of the Open Bible. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harding, who died Sunday, was born in Glenns Ferry, Idaho.

He had lived in Spokane since 1949, and graduated from Eugene (Ore.) Bible College. He served as pastor and co-pastor in 28 states and six foreign countries for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Harding; two daughters, Carrie Liptac of Spokane and Debbie Henry of Eureka, Mont.; one sister, Surena Hines of Great Falls, Mont.; three brothers, David Harding of Little Rock, Ark., Sam Harding of Portland and Phil Harding of Great Falls; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Ada Dixon Spokane

Visitation for Ada L. Dixon, 77, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Dixon, a 27-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Latah and graduated from Latah High School. She had worked at University Manor.

She married Lorren Dixon in 1940 and they moved to Spokane in 1969.

She was active in the Assembly of God and the Women’s Missionary Council.

Her husband died in 1992.

Mrs. Dixon is survived by one son, Ronnie Dixon, and one daughter, Cheryl Dixon, both of Spokane; and two sisters, Mildred Girsberger of Spokane and Aimee Hurst of Moses Lake.

Sister Mary Angela Tamborini Spokane

Burial Mass for Sister Mary Angela (Mary Nativity) Tamborini, 98, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Poor Clare Monastery chapel. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Tamborini was born in Congress, Ariz.

She entered the Poor Clare Monastery in Spokane in 1916.

She spent 80 years as a Poor Clare Nun and served many years as the community receptionist and as abbess for six years.

She is survived by one nephew, James Frazier of Burlingame, Calif.

Margie Sykes Spokane

Memorial service for Margie (Pless) Sykes, 81, will be held at a later date in Murrieta, Calif. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Sykes, who was born in Easton, Wash., died Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane for 50 years.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband of 57 years, Joyce Sykes, died in 1993.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph Sykes of Santa Barbara, Calif., and James Sykes of Spokane; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Freedia Thompson Spokane

Visitation for Freedia M. Thompson, 92, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at noon at Salem Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Thompson, who died Sunday, was born in Pleasantville, Iowa.

She moved to Spokane from Montana in 1944 and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Joseph, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Viva King, and one son, Gary Garberg, both of Spokane; one sister, Ruby Detienne of Hot Springs, Mont.; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Rubye Worley Coquille, Ore.

Visitation for Rubye A. Worley, 78, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Bentley, Okla., Mrs. Worley died Friday in North Bend, Ore.

Mrs. Worley lived in Spokane from 1960 to 1992, when she moved to Coquille.

She was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2 and had worked in the Sacred Heart Medical Center cafeteria for many years.

Mrs. Worley is survived by one daughter, Margaret Rippetoe; four sons, Les Wright, and Donald, Bob and Joe Ford; two brothers, Corky and Dennis Smalley; one sister, Christine Armstrong; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Harris Spokane

Visitation for Dorothy K. Harris, 80, is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Saltese Cemetery in Greenacres.

Mrs. Harris, who died Friday, was born in Tarkio, Mo.

She had lived in the Spokane Valley for more than 60 years. She was a homemaker and had worked in public relations.

Her husband, Wayne Harris, died in 1987.

She is survived by three sons, Roger Harris of Greenacres, Daniel Harris of Othello, Wash., and Gordon Harris of Veradale; one daughter, Dorayne Harris of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Isabelle Lauarient of Trail, British Columbia, and Evelyn Murray of Spokane; two brothers, Don Innes of Seattle and Clyde Innes of Deer Lake, Wash.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy Berg Cusick, Wash.

No service will be held for Roy N. Berg, 75, at his request. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home of Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Berg died Saturday at home. He was born in Stepic, Mont.

He served in the Army from 1940 to 1945.

In 1942 he married Maryrose Cusack in San Francisco.

They moved to Spokane from Montana in 1964, and in 1983 they moved to a house that he built on the east side of the Pend Oreille River near Cusick.

He was a master carpenter and had helped build banks and Spokane schools. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of the Hillyard Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Berg is survived by his wife, and one brother, Leonard Berg of Elk Grove, Calif.

Jack Jeffries Deer Park

Service for Jack D. Jeffries, 46, is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jeffries died Thursday. He was born in Chewelah, Wash.

He worked as a general laborer on farms and operating heavy equipment.

He is survived by one brother, James “Jack” Jeffries of Springdale, Wash.

Clara Cunningham Grangeville, Idaho

Burial Mass for Clara Josephine Cunningham, 89, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Gall Catholic Church in Colton, Wash. Burial will follow at the St. Gall Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cunningham died Monday at Idaho County Nursing Home. She was born in Buffalo, Neb.

She graduated from Kearney State Normal College in Nebraska with a teaching certificate. She taught until she married Leo Cunningham in 1927, in Cheyenne, Wyo.

They lived in Lexington, Neb., Weiser, Idaho, and from 1942 until 1951 in Boise. In 1951 they moved to Riggins, Idaho, and then to Grangeville. They moved to Colton in 1956.

Mr. Cunningham died in 1986 and Mrs. Cunningham returned to Grangeville in 1987.

She had been a correspondent for the Lewiston Tribune in Lewiston.

She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Grangeville.

Mrs. Cunningham is survived by one son, Michael Cunningham of Slate Creek, Idaho; eight daughters, Juanita Tomczak and Pamela Troglin, both of Boring, Ore., Angelia Davis of North Port, Wash., Leah Johnson of Washougal, Wash., Patricia Lamb of Grangeville, Marilyn McNutt of Ely, Nev., Margaret Becker of Port Angeles, Wash., and Judith Fike of Gilbert, Ariz.; 40 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pauline Haugen Spokane

Service for Pauline Haugen, 85, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Private burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Haugen, who died Saturday, was born in Daisy, N.D.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane since 1946.

She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Her husband of 54 years, Harold Haugen, died in July.

She is survived by two sisters, Rose Koch of Valley City, N.D., and Marie Berg-Loy of Spokane.

Hilma Herman Spokane

Born in Northwood, N.D., Mrs. Herman, died Thursday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 38 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Virginia Ellis of Lewiston; one son, Thomas Herman of Spokane; five sisters; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Avon Weetman Spokane

No service will be held for Avon H. Weetman, 90, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Weetman, who died Sunday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He worked as a painter and a locksmith. He retired from Seattle First National Bank.

His wife, Kathleen Weetman, died in 1994.

He is survived by one brother, Roger Weetman of Spokane.
