Kuney’s Overtime Heroics Lift Dragons Past Wellpinit

Dan Kuney scored the first five points of overtime Thursday as South Division champion St. George’s outlasted visiting the Wellpinit Redskins 60-52 in overtime during a Panorama League Tournament opener.

Kuney made a 3-pointer and two free throws after a Wellpinit baseline jumper with 6 seconds left sent the game into OT.

Dylan Averett had 19 rebounds for St. George’s (19-2), which extended its win streak to 15. The Dragons host Northwest Christian in a 7 p.m. Friday semifinal. Wellpinit, No. 4 from the North, plays a 7 p.m. Friday loser-out game at Curlew.

Mark Rickard finished with 20 points and eight rebounds as the eighth-ranked Tigers (19-2), top seed from the North, overcame cold shooting to beat the visiting Chargers (7-15).

Kris Kuchenmeister added eight rebounds for Republic, which won its 16th straight. Republic hosts Selkirk at 6 p.m. Friday in a semifinal. Springdale, No. 4 from the South, plays a 7 p.m. Friday loser-out game at Inchelium.

Brodie Larson made two 3-pointers in the third quarter to rally the Rangers (17-4) over the visiting Hornets (7-12) at Ione.

Shawn Christianson scored 13 of his 21 in the first half for Inchelium, the third seed from the North. Shawn Pichette led Selkirk, No. 2 from the South, with 19 points.

Jeremy Affeldt scored 23, and added 15 rebounds and four steals, and the visiting Crusaders (14-7) beat the Cougars (12-9) at the free-throw line.

Curlew, the second seed from the North, committed 20 fouls to the four of NWC. The Crusaders, No. 3 from the South, shot 10 of 17 from the line to Curlew’s 1 of 2.
