Csi Overturns Nic With Overtime Rally

Jonathan Hay Correspondent

The College of Southern Idaho womens basketball team had just watched North Idaho College run off six straight points to start the overtime period, but didn’t panic.

Instead, the visiting Golden Eagles showed their poise by running off 10 unanswered points of their own to win the Scenic West Athletic Conference battle 72-68 in Christianson Gym.

“When NIC scored the first six in overtime, I thought they had us,” CSI coach Joel Bate said. “I think it (coming back to win) showed some character in our team.”

NIC got behind early as its leading scorer, Tanya Kirk, was held scoreless in the first half by the smothering defense of CSI’s Mandi Ortega. The Cardinals were able to make a run to close out the half tied at 28-all as Jelena Zrnic scored eight points in the last 10 minutes.

Kirk made it known that she would not be a non-factor early in the second half, running off 12 points in less than 4 minutes. The last basket was a 3-pointer that gave the Cardinals their first lead of the half at 45-43.

On the other end of the court, Franci Olson was keeping the Golden Eagles in the game almost single-handedly. She scored 21 points in the second half on her way to 28 for the game.

The final minutes of regulation were wild as neither team could take control. With 3 seconds left, Kirk was fouled on an in-bounds play and went to the line to shoot a 1-and-1 with her team down 62-60. She made both ends to send the game into overtime.

After NIC’s Jaime Richards made two free throws to make the score 68-62 in overtime, the Cardinals did not score again. Ortega and Olson took over, combining for eight points. Ortega sealed the victory by blocking Kirk’s shot with 10 seconds to play.”The kids played their hearts out and they deserved to win,” he said.

CSI completed a sweep of the Cardinals after a victory earlier in the season at Twin Falls and moved to 11-2 in league play and 21-3 overall.
