Lacrosse-Washtucna Wins Crown

B boys basketball

LaCrosse-Washtucna (16-6) put together an 8-0 run to start the third quarter and toppled ninth-ranked Garfield-Palouse 65-56 in the title game of the Whitman County Tournament at Endicott. Gar-Pal had won 15 of its last 16, including a pair of league wins over L-W.

The top-seeded Tigercats open District 9-B play Thursday at Washington State against Blue Mountain League No. 4, either Asotin (12-7) or Touchet (9-10. The Vikings (17-5) draw BM No. 3 DeSales (12-9).

The Eagles (7-15) made nine free throws in the fourth quarter and had a 16-4 scoring edge from the line in beating the Spartans (12-11).

Rosalia pulled within three points with 6:30 left before fading. SJE, the third seed, opens district Friday against BM No. 2 Waitsburg (12-7). Rosalia, the fourth seed, opens against BM champion Pomeroy (17-2).

At the league tournament in Reardan, Phil Rafter scored six points during a fourth-quarter rally, then added four points in overtime as the ninth-ranked Lancers (16-6) escaped an upset bid to eliminate the Wildcats (6-16).

Liberty plays Valley Christian (11-12) on Thursday for the third and fourth seeds to the District 7-B Tournament.
