Twa Trims Loss To $28 Million In Last Quarter Of ‘95

From Wire Reports

Trans World Airlines almost wiped out its losses in the October-December quarter and said that it would have made money if not for $156 million spent on its reorganization.

For the three months ended Dec. 31, TWA lost $28 million. That compared with a $245 million loss in the fourth quarter of 1994. Revenues rose to $804.6 million from $772.3 million.

The airline collected more money on average from each passenger and carried more people, despite flying less. The result was fewer empty seats and more efficient use of its aircraft.

“Today, we have the financial strength necessary to make needed investments in our operations and to build an airline that can prosper long-term,” said President Jeffrey H. Erickson.

Full year losses were $227.45 million, down from $435.83 million in 1994. Revenues were $3.32 billion, up from $3.41 billion.

In other earnings reports Wednesday:

Campbell Soup Co. posted an 11.7 percent increase in quarterly profits, citing higher sales from its soups to chocolates and cookies.

The company earned a record $258 million, or $1.03 per share, in its second fiscal quarter ended Jan. 28, compared with $231 million, or 93 cents per share, during the same period a year earlier.

Sales climbed 9.2 percent to a record $2.22 billion from $2.03 billion in the 1995 period as its share of the soup market increased in both the United states and abroad. Global soup volumes rose 7 percent.

Truck and school-bus maker Navistar International Corp. said midwinter storms contributed to a 4.3 percent decline in first-quarter earnings.

Navistar earned $22 million, or 20 cents a share, in the three months ending Jan. 31, down from $23 million, or 21 cents a share, for the same quarter last year.

Consolidated sales and revenues from the company’s manufacturing and financial services rose to $1.432 billion compared to $1.416 billion for the same quarter last year.
