Serbs On The Move; U.S. Troops On Alert

With a shortage of vehicles putting many refugees afoot, thousands of terrified Serbs Thursday trekked over snowy mountains away from their homes near Sarajevo. Men’s backs strained under the weight of sacks stuffed with whatever possessions they were able to carry, women harnessed themselves to sleds.

U.S. troops in Bosnia have been placed on alert after reliable reports that Gen. Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb leader, had issued an order to his forces to kidnap American soldiers and other NATO troops in apparent retaliation for the capture of two of his deputies by Bosnian government forces.
