Deputies Arrest Work-Release Center Escapee

Brian Coddington Staff Writer

Sheriff’s deputies captured a man Monday night who escaped from a work-release house in the city and may charge him with breaking into a Spokane Valley business.

Deputies responded to a burglary alarm at Radio Shack, 5308 E. Sprague, about 10:30 p.m. The store’s glass door had been broken, setting off the alarm.

Deputies questioned Horatio DeMarious Smith, who was waiting at the bus stop in front of the store, said sheriff’s Lt. David Wiyrick. A sheriff’s dispatcher checked Smith’s record and discovered that he had escaped from the Cornelius House, a Spokane work-release center on South Thor.

The 35-year-old Smith was booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of escape. Second-degree burglary charges may also be filed, Wiyrick said.

When Smith was arrested, his hair was filled with broken glass, Wiyrick said. Deputies said they also found a stereo cord in his pocket.

A compact disc player with blood on it had been discarded a short distance away and Smith’s hand was cut, leading deputies to believe Smith broke into the store, Wiyrick said.

Convenience store robbed

A man dressed all in black robbed a Valley convenience store Friday night at knife point.

The clerk told deputies a man came into Exxon Food Shop, 18709 E. Appleway, about 9:30 p.m. The man rushed the clerk, held a knife to his back and forced him to open the cash register.

An unknown amount of money was taken from the register and the man fled east on Appleway Avenue, Wiyrick said. The clerk was not injured.

The man was 24, 5-foot-11 and 150 pounds. He was wearing a black baseball cap, black Seattle Mariners shirt, black jeans and a trench coat.

Man arrested for beating girl

A Valley man was arrested Friday for slamming a 5-year-old girl into a bedroom wall, deputies said.

Dean P. Hall, 21, who gave his address as 10210 E. 13th, was charged with second-degree assault of a child.

The girl had a bruised and swollen nose and bruises under her eyes. A neighbor reported the girl’s injuries to deputies.

Child Protective Services removed the girl from the apartment she shared with her mother and took her to the hospital for treatment.

Youth arrested for burglary

A 14-year-old boy was charged Saturday with stealing equipment from a boat stored in a Valley storage unit.

Deputies said the teenager climbed over a fence and broke into a building housing the boat and a trailer.

Once inside, he took stereo equipment and a spotlight from the boat, Wiyrick said. Deputies questioned the teen and recovered the equipment from a nearby house.

The teen was booked into juvenile detention for second-degree burglary.

Boyfriend arrested for attack

Deputies arrested a man who they said attacked his girlfriend after she asked him to help her with household chores.

David Irwin Reeves, 18, was charged Friday with second-degree assault.

Reeves’ 18-year-old girlfriend told deputies Reeves threw her on the floor and choked her when she asked him to take the garbage out.

The woman briefly lost consciousness, but awakened when Reeves quit choking her, Wiyrick said.

When the woman went to school, a counselor noticed her bruises and encouraged her to go the hospital. The woman went to Valley Hospital and Medical Center where she was treated and released.

Deputies questioned Reeves at his 4105 N. McDonald home and arrested him.
