Pirates Knock Off Bullpups

Garrett Riddle Correspondent

Anna Mullerleile had a career-high 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead visiting Rogers over Gonzaga Prep 49-44 for just the Pirates’ second win over the Bullpups in 20 years of Greater Spokane League girls basketball.

Mullerleile scored three unanswered baskets with 5 minutes remaining to help Rogers (2-6, 2-8) open a six-point lead. G-Prep (3-5, 7-5) could pull no closer than 45-42 with just under a minute remaining.

“She (Mullerleile) had a great game,” Pirates coach Drew Vanderpool said of the 5-foot-9 junior. “She hustles all the time and can play three positions on the floor - guard, wing or forward. At times, she was guarding one of G-Prep’s 6-1 players.”

Vanderpool said Rogers has come close to winning a number of games this year and things finally started falling into place for the Pirates after beating North Central 67-30 last week.

“I think the level of play, the intensity, is growing,” he said. “They didn’t play together at all over the summer, but now the team is coming together.”

The last time the Pirates beat the Bullpups was in 1989, 56-49.
