Pirates’ Rally Comes Up Short

Whitworth College overcame an eight-point deficit with 1:48 left, trading 3-pointers for Lewis & Clark’s free throws. But the Pirates’ rally fell short when Gabe Jones’ running 5-footer missed, allowing the Pioneers to escape with an 86-84 men’s NCIC basketball win Saturday.

The Pirates hit five straight 3s, but the Pioneers (11-5, 5-2) drained 10 of 11 late foul shots to win it.

Brandon Nicholson had a career-high 34 points (15 for 17 from the line) and 10 rebounds.

For the Pirates (13-4, 5-2), Jones hit the first two late 3-pointers and led Whitworth with 22 points.

“We went into a stretch in the second half when we just couldn’t shoot it well,” Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs said.”But our kids never quit. They just kept battling until the end.”
