Free Throw Leads Tech Past Texas

Associated Press

College basketball

Cory Carr scored 18 points, including a key free throw with 6.5 seconds remaining, as No. 22 Texas Tech defeated Texas 79-78 Sunday at Lubbock, Texas.

Carr missed the front half of a two-shot foul, but his second shot gave the Red Raiders (16-1, 6-0 Southwest Conference) a 79-75 lead, so that Brandy Perryman’s long 3-pointer with a half-second to play just cut the final margin.

Texas (11-5, 4-2) outrebounded Tech 49-40, but made only 31-of-76 from the field and committed 23 fouls. The Red Raiders scored 26 points at the foul line.

Jason Sasser had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Tech. Tony Battie and Koy Smith added 12 points each, while Jason Martin had 10 assists.

Sonny Alvarado scored 13 points for Texas, and Dennis Jordan added 11.

(3) Kansas 88, Nebraska 73

Paul Pierce scored 25 points and the Jayhawks used a 22-6 run early in the second half to blow open a close game and beat the Cornhuskers at Lincoln, Neb., for coach Roy Williams’ 200th career victory.

Kansas held a 36-35 halftime lead, but three consecutive 3-pointers to open the second half sparked the decisive run. Two free throws by Jacque Vaughn gave Kansas its largest lead, 61-43, with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Kansas (16-1, 4-0 Big Eight) forced Nebraska into 22 turnovers and outrebounded the Huskers (15-5, 3-2) 42-33, including a 20-9 margin on the offensive boards.

(4) Connecticut 76, Virginia 46

Ray Allen scored 24 points and keyed a 17-0 run in the first half as the Huskies beat the Cavaliers at Hartford, Conn., and extended its winning streak to a school-record 18 games.

Allen, who couldn’t seem to shake a pesky Curtis Staples in the first seven minutes, finally got going with a 3-pointer and had 18 points before halftime.

The Huskies (19-1) held the Cavaliers (7-9) to 7-for-27 shooting from the field in the first half and led 39-18 at the break. Virginia’s leading scorer, Harold Deane, didn’t hit from the field until five minutes into the second half.

(5) Cincinnati 85, Southern California 53

Art Long ended his seven-game shooting slump by scoring 15 points and leading a devastating first-half run that carried the Bearcats to the victory over the road-weary Trojans at Cincinnati.

Cincinnati (14-1) opened the game with a 12-3 run and never struggled against Southern California (10-9), who have been blown out in their last two games. The Trojans have played seven ranked opponents in their last 12 games, all but one of them on the road, and have been at home for only two of their last 12 games overall.

Long, a 6-foot-9 center slowed by illness the past month, put Cincinati in control from the opening tip. He scored the Bearcats’ first eight points and had 10 at halftime - only his third double-digit game in the last 12.

(22) Iowa 70, (16) Michigan 61

Andre Woolridge matched his career high with 28 points and Kenyon Murray added 14, leading the Hawkeyes to the victory over the Wolverines at Iowa City, Iowa.

Jess Settles finished with 12 points and nine assists for Iowa (15-4, 4-3 Big Ten), which remained unbeaten at home.

Maurice Taylor scored 17 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots for Michigan. Louis Bullock added 15 points and Albert White 13 for the Wolverines (14-6, 4-3), who had won seven of the previous nine games against Iowa.
