Work On Auschwitz Mall Halted Again

Compiled From Wire Services

Two days after resuming construction on a controversial mini-mall across from the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz, the developer suspended work again Wednesday.

Work on the shops and visitors’ center was first stopped April 2 after Polish authorities, camp survivors and Jewish leaders said the project would desecrate the memory of Auschwitz victims.

Developer Janusz Marszalek resumed work Monday, saying that under Polish law, construction could be suspended for a maximum of two months. “That deadline is up,” he said. But Polish officials said his action was illegal.
